Stout runs past St. Scholastica in tourney opener

Stout forces 20 first half turnover, build as much 42 point lead

MENOMONIE (November 28, 2009) - UW-Stout forced 20 first half turnovers, took a 23 point lead into halftime, built up as much as a 42 point lead late in the game and went on to a 90-52 win over St. Scholastica in the UW-Stout Quality Inn and Suites Turkey Shootout at Johnson Fieldhouse Saturday.

The Blue Devils (2-3) will play St. Benedict in the championship game of the tournament Sunday, Nov. 29 at 3 p.m. St. Scholastica (2-3) will play Wartburg College at 11 a.m. in the consolation game. St. Benedict defeated Wartburg, 78-70, in the tournament's first game.

Stout had a balanced attack as they cruised to the 23 point halftime lead.

All-American Julia Hirssig (Sr, Rochester, Minn) came to life in the second half, scoring 15 of her game high 23 points after the break. Hirssig was near perfect ont he afternoon, connecting on 8-of-9 shots from teh floor and 7-of-8 free throws. Hirssig pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.

Danielle DeWitt (Sr, Green Bay) was the only other player in double digits, coming off the bench to score 13 points, matching her career high.

St. Scholastica had no players in double digits with Alexa Leighton leading the way with nine points. Erin Morstad and Laura Amys each scored seven points and Morstad matched Hirssig with seven rebounds.

Janice Reeves (Fr, Stratford) and Stacy Bush (Sr, Hills, Minn) each scored six points to set a new career high. Cody VanDenHeuvel (So, Cadott) scored four points for a new career high and Brittney Gerber (Jr, Exeland) scored four points to match a career best.
