MENOMONIE (October 17, 2009) - UW-Whitewater's offense compiled 431 yards on its way to a 38-3 rout of UW-Stout, Saturday afternoon at Don & Nona Williams Stadium.
The second-ranked Warhawks (6-0, 3-0) scored on six of their first seven possessions before subbing their second-team offense. The Blue Devils' (4-2, 1-2) offensive woes continued today, as the game marks the second consecutive game without a touchdown.
Whitewater got on the board on their first possession when they went 80 yards in four minutes to take a 7-0 lead. After a fourth down defensive stand on their own 26-yard line, the Warhawks drove 74 yards on 18 plays, running over eight minutes off the clock to extend their lead to 14-0.
Stout was forced into a three-and-out on their next possession, and gave the ball back to Whitewater with five and a half minutes left in the half. The Warhawks drove into Stout territory, but
Adam Churchill (Jr, Plum City) ended the drive with an interception, one that he returned 74 yards before being tripped up at Whitewater's eight yard-line.
The Blue Devils nearly cashed in on the turnover when
Patrick Mengelkoch (Jr, Champlin, Minn.) narrowly missed a touchdown along the back of the end zone that would have pulled Stout within one score. Instead,
Kyle Martin (Sr, Hubertus) hit a 31-yard field goal to get his team on the board, 14-3.
Whitewater's two-minute drill was effective on the ensuing possession, as they drove 52 yards in a minute and 48 seconds, scoring on a Jeff Donovan run with four seconds left in the half.
The Warhawks scored on their first possession in the second half, and added a field goal on their next drive to increase their lead to 31-3.
After another defensive stand, Whitewater scored the final points of the game on a drive capped off with a touchdown pass by Donovan, who finished the game with 260 yards on 23-for-30 passing.
Whitewater's Levell Coppage ended as the game's leading rusher, stacking up 85 yards on 22 carries.
Craig Warminski (So, Stanley) led the Blue Devils with 51 yards on the ground.
Ross Carey (So, Little Suamico) ended the game 10-for-18 for 92 yards passing. Stout's 185 yards on offense marks their lowest offensive output of the season.
Churchill's interception, combined with a
Mitch Ruesch (So, New London) fumble recovery led the Blue Devils to a 2-0 victory in the turnover battle.
Stout will be on the road the next two weekends, as they first travel to UW-Eau Claire on Oct. 24, followed by a trip to face UW-La Crosse on Halloween.
