MENOMONIE (January 17, 2009) - UW-Whitewater's Kelsey Hendrickson hit a 3-pointer with 56 seconds left to give the Warhawks just enough cushion to defeat UW-Stout, 69-63, in a back-and-forth contest Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
In a game that featured 11 tied scores and 11 lead changes, the Warhawks (15-1, 6-1) were clinging to a slim 64-63 lead when Rachel Woolever found Hendrickson just off the top of the key for the decision-maker.
Stout (8-8, 3-4) missed a couple of opportunities to pull to within at least two points. The Warhawks hit two free throws to finish the game.
The Blue Devils, behind nine first half steals, took a 39-36 halftime lead, then built that up to as much as 10 points four minutes into the half. Stout maintained around a six to eight point lead for the next three minute and were leading 51-43 when Whitewater took the lead on a 10-1 run with 8:39 left on the clock. The lead by either would not be more than three points until the waning seconds of the contest.
Whitewater's Tiffany Morton led all scorers with 20 points and 11 rebounds. The Warhawks got 10 points from Hendrickson and Nicole Bundy.
Charlee Edwards (Sr, Danbury) paced the Blue Devils with 17 points and eight rebounds. Julia Hirssig (Jr, Rochester, Minn) had 13 points and nine rebounds and Kim Stokke (Jr, Menomonie) scored 12 points.
Whitewater held a 46-38 lead in rebounding. Neither team had particulary good nights shooting, both from the floor and the line. Whitewater hit 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the floor and 70.8 percent (17-of-24) from the line. Stout shot 31.3 percent (21-of-67) from the floor and 66.7 percent (16-of-24) from the free throw stripe.
Stout will be at UW-Superior, Wednesday, Jan. 21, then will host UW-Platteville, Saturday, Jan. 24 at 3 p.m.
