Pointers move past Stout in second half

UW-Stevens Point 63, UW-Stout 54

MENOMONIE  (January 14, 2009) - Eighth ranked UW-Stevens Point had three players score in double figures in just the second half alone as the Pointers pulled away from UW-Stout in the second half with a 63-54 win at Johnson Fieldhouse Wednesday.

The Pointers' Janell Van Gomple scored 15 of her game-high 17 points in the second stanza to propel Stevens Point's win. Katie Weber scored 11 of her 15 points after the break and Britta Petersen scored 10 of her 16 points after intermission.

Stout (8-7, 3-3) took a 24-18 lead into halftime and built their way up to an eight point, 39-31, lead midway through the period. But Stevens Point (14-1, 6-0) went on a 12-0 run to take a five point, 44-39, lead with 7:35 remaining. 

A 3-pointer by Megan Maslowski (Jr, Marshfield) slowed the run by the Pointer, but they never trailed the rest of the evening.

Maslowski finished with a team-high 12 points. Charlee Edwards (Sr, Danbury) finished the night with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Stout's leading scorer, Julia Hirssig (Jr, Rochester, Minn) tallied 10 points. Hirssig had eight rebounds for the evening, but seven came in the first half.

Stout will host UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Jan. 17 at 3 p.m., then will be at UW-Superior, Wednesday, Jan. 21.
