Augustana 80, UW-Stout 66
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (December 20, 2008) - Augustana College went on a 17-4 run to pull away from UW-Stout and the Vikings went on to an 80-66 win over the Blue Devils Saturday in frigid Sioux Falls, SD.
Stout held a 43-42 lead three minutes into the second stanza when the Vikings' Megan Doyle scored eight points in the run to push Augustana to a 59-47 lead. The Blue Devils (6-4) managed to get only as close as 11 points the rest of the way.
Julia Hirssig (Jr, Rochester, Minn) collected another double-double for the Blue Devils, pouring in a game-high 21 points and pulling down 16 rebounds. Hirssig scored 12 points in the first half as Stout held a 42-36 halftime lead. Charlee Edwards (Sr, Danbury) added 13 points.
Augustana, the second NCAA Division II school Stout has played in as many games, was led by Whitney Hofer's 20 points. Amy Puthoff finished with 16 points and Doyle collected 15 points.
Stout held a decided advantage off the boards, pulling down 49 to Augustana's 36. But the Vikings (7-3) forced 33 Stout turnovers and had 16 steals.
Stout return to action Sunday, Dec. 29, when they travel to Thousand Oaks, Calif, to participate in the California Lutheran Tournament. Stout will open be facing Manchester University. They will play either California Lutheran or John Carroll University on Monday, Dec. 30.
