MENOMONIE (December 10, 2008) - Julia Hirssig (Jr, Rochester, Minn.) collected 25 points and 11 rebounds as she led her UW-Stout Blue Devils past the UW-River Falls Falcons, 80-57, Wednesday night at Johnson Fieldhouse.
Neither team did a whole lot to get on top early, as the two squads were tied at 15 with 11 minutes left in the first half. That is when the Blue Devils decided to kick into into high gear. With an 18-17 lead, Stout went on a 25-7 run to end the half, fueled primarily by stingy defense and domination on the boards. The Blue Devils' 43 first-half points were the most allowed by River Falls so far this year.
Again, Stout started the half sluggish after the intermission. Within three minutes, the Falcons had cut their deficit from 18 to 12. The Blue Devils rebounded quickly, though, going on a 9-1 run of their own, and held at least a 16-point lead the rest of the game.
Hirssig's 25 points coming from 9-12 shooting and her 11 boards were both game-highs. She also added a game-high three blocks.
For the visiting team, Alise Holst led the way with 17 points while Maranda Dohrn pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Blue Devils stay at home this weekend when they play host to the UW-Oshkosh Titans in a men's and women's doubleheader, Saturday, Dec. 13 at Johnson Fieldhouse. The women are expected to tip off at 7 p.m., following the men who are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
