St. Norbert 76, UW-Stout 71
DE PERE (November 16, 2008) - In a game that featured 12 tied scores and a lead of no more than six points anywhere in the game, St. Norbert College defeated UW-Stout, 76-71, in the championship game of the Associated Financial Group Tip-Off Classic at St. Norbert College.
Stout's Julia Hirssig (Jr, Rochester, Minn) continued her hot hand, scoring 18 of her game-high 22 points in the first half. Hirssig was held to four point in the second half, but collected six rebounds to finish the game with 14 rebounds.
The 17th ranked Green Knights (2-0) held a 39-38 halftime lead, but Stout (1-1) took a short-lived two point lead early in the second half. The Blue Devils went on an 8-3 run around the six minute mark of the second half, to take a 66-62 lead. The Knights tied the score several time, then took a 72-71 lead with 1:28 remaining and never trailed as they went to the free throw line for the final four points on free throws.
Danielle DeWitt (Jr, Green Bay), who joined Hirssig on the all-tournament team, added 13 points and Charlee Edwards (Sr, Danbury) contributed 11.
For St. Norbert, Morgan Strasser scored 19 points. Denise Heuser added 17 points and Stefanie Bunday, 12.
Stout is idle until they host their own Thanksgiving weekend tournament, Nov. 29-30. Stout will meet Cardinal Stritch at 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov.29.
St. Norbert Tournament | UW-Stout 87, North Central 70
DE PERE (November 15, 2008) - Julia Hirssig (Jr, Rochester, Minn) scored 23 points - 19 in the first half - as UW-Stout rolled over North Central College, 87-70, in the opening game of the St. Norbert College Tournament.
Hirssig, who last season led the entire NCAA Division III in shooting percentage, was dead-eye again, finishing the night hitting 8-of-10 from the floor. Hirssig picked up on her free throw shooting percentage from last year, making 7-of-8 charity shots. She pulled down nine rebounds.
The Blue Devils had three players in double figures. Charlee Edwards (Sr, Danbury) tipped the scales with 16 points and Danielle DeWitt (Jr, Green Bay) popped in 10 points.
Stout jumped out to a 43-33 halftime lead and expanded that to as much as 30 points with four minutes left to play.
The Cardinals got 15 points from Meghan McGuire and 12 points from Andrielle Baggett.
Stout will play the winner of the St. Norbert/Northland game at 3 p.m.
