WALLA WALLA, Wash. — The University of Wisconsin-Stout Polytechnic volleyball team defeated Whitman College 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-12) on Friday. The Blue Devils finished with 34 kills and a .222 hitting percentage, while holding Whitman to 23 kills and a -.027 hitting percentage.
Whitman scored the first four points and held an 11-7 lead in the opening set before
Addison Kessler's kill sparked Stout's first run.
Stephanie Petrbok served through seven straight points as the Blue Devils surged ahead 15-11, with
Brooke McCune contributing three kills,
Sloan Horgan and Kessler adding kills, and Whitman committing two attack errors during the stretch. After Whitman cut the score to 15-13, a kill by Horgan returned the serve to Stout, and
Kailey Kline served the final nine points. The Blue Devils closed the set 25-13 with kills from Horgan and McCune, two assisted blocks, and four Whitman errors.
Stout moved in front early in the second set, using a McCune kill and two Whitman setting errors to build an 8-4 lead. Whitman fought back from a 17-15 deficit, scoring four straight points to move ahead 19-17. Stout took the next point on a Whitman setting error, and
Lainey Todd served the final seven points as the Blue Devils closed the set on an 8-0 run.
Kyra Giffen had two kills during the closing stretch, Todd added three service aces, and UW-Stout finished the set 25-19.
Todd served Stout to the first nine points of the third set, starting with an ace and including two Horgan kills, a Giffen kill, and multiple blocks involving Horgan and Kessler for a 9-0 lead. After Whitman got on the board, kills by Giffen, McCune, and Horgan helped UW-Stout extend the margin to 14-1. The Blue Devils moved to 20-5 on a McCune kill and a
Falon Hepola ace. Whitman pulled as close as 21-11 before a
Hope Bushendorf kill and two late Whitman attack errors helped Stout close the set 25-12.
