MEQUON, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Stout women's lacrosse team used a big second half and a seven-goal performance from
Mai Nou Vang to defeat Concordia Wisconsin, 14-9, Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 4-2 on the season while Concordia Wisconsin falls to 1-3.
Stout struck first midway through the opening quarter when
Megan Palmer converted a free-position opportunity two and half minutes into the game. Concordia responded to tie the game, but Vang scored with one second left in the period to give the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead after the first.
The Falcons briefly took momentum in the second quarter, scoring four goals in the period to take a 5-4 lead Vang scored her second of the game with five seconds left in the half to tie the contest at 5-5.
Ava Loveland and
Brinley Tonn each scored during the quarter for Stout.
Stout took control in the third quarter, outscoring Concordia Wisconsin 4-3. Vang scored twice early in the frame before Palmer and Tonn added goals to give the Blue Devils a 9-8 advantage heading into the fourth.
The Blue Devils pulled away in the final quarter, scoring five times while holding the Falcons to a single goal. Vang scored three times in the period and Palmer added two goals, including the final tally with 28 seconds remaining, to seal the 14-9 victory.
Vang led the Blue Devils with seven goals and eight draw controls while adding two ground balls. Palmer finished with four goals and an assist, and Tonn added two goals. Loveland chipped in one goal, while
Luci Fitzgerald recorded two assists.
Erin Nolan,
Riley Schulte and
Tatum Kluender each added an assist.
Stout outshot Concordia Wisconsin 42-21 and held a 25-18 edge in ground balls. The Blue Devils also forced 30 Falcon turnovers. Seven on the Falcons nine goals were on free position shots.
The Blue Devils will return to action when they travel to Angola, Indiana to face Trine University on Sunday, March 15.
