ANGOLA, Ind. – Despite a nine point offensive performance from
Mai Nou Vang, the University of Wisconsin-Stout women's lacrosse team fell 13-11 to Trine University on Sunday afternoon at Zollner Stadium.
Vang was spectacular for the Blue Devils, netting seven goals and adding two assists to finish with nine total points. However, a high-scoring second period by the Thunder proved to be the difference as Trine maintained its undefeated record.
The Blue Devils (4-3 overall) were paced by an outstanding performance from
Mai Nou Vang, who erupted for a game-high 7 goals (including 1 power-play tally and 6 unassisted) along with 2 assists for 9 points. She also controlled 6 draw controls and was a constant threat throughout. Vang scored four of Stout's six second-half goals as the team mounted repeated comeback pushes.
Supporting Vang offensively were
Riley Schulte (1 goal),
Brinley Tonn (1 goal, 2 draw controls),
Megan Palmer (1 goal), and
Luci Fitzgerald (1 goal).
Ava Loveland chipped in with 1 assist.
Trine (4-0) jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after the first period, then exploded for 7 goals in the second quarter to take a commanding 9-4 halftime advantage. The Thunder got big days from Sydney Weiss (5 goals, including 2 power-play scores and the game-winner) and Erin Fariello (4 goals), with Izabelle Dominski adding 3 goals and 1 assist.
Stout showed resilience in the second half, outscoring Trine 7-4 across the final 30 minutes. The Blue Devils closed the gap to 13-11 with just over two minutes remaining after Tonn scored off an assist from Vang at 2:20 in the fourth quarter. Despite a late timeout and a free-position opportunity in the closing seconds, Stout couldn't find the equalizer as Trine held on for the two-goal win.
