ST. PAUL — The University of Wisconsin-Stout Polytechnic volleyball team (15-10, 1-5 WIAC) defeated Hamline (5-20, 2-8 MIAC) 3-1 (25-10, 26-28, 25-16, 25-16) Monday night at Hutton Arena. The Blue Devils hit .233 and held the Pipers to .079 while recording a 16-8 advantage in total blocks.
Stout dominated the opening set, using a pair of early runs to take control. After the teams played to a 3-3 tie, the Blue Devils scored four straight points behind a Kyra Giffen kill, a Brooke McCune service ace, an Emma Barton kill and a Barton-Sloan Horgan block to take a 7-3 lead. UW-Stout later used a 6-0 run to extend its advantage to 20-8, with Kailey Kline serving an ace and Barton, Hope Bushendorf and McCune adding kills. McCune recorded three more kills late in the set before Giffen closed out the 25-10 win with a kill.
The Blue Devils opened the second set with a 4-1 lead on kills from Bushendorf and McCune, along with two Hamline errors. The Pipers pulled within 10-9, but McCune recorded three kills during Stout's response before Giffen pushed the lead to 17-13. Hamline rallied to tie the set at 19-19 and later scored four straight points to take a 24-22 lead. McCune answered with back-to-back kills to even the score at 24-24 and added another to tie it at 25-25. Addison Kessler gave Stout a 26-25 advantage, but Hamline scored the final three points to claim the set 28-26.
Stout responded with a strong start in the third set. Brynn Hessel and Bushendorf teamed up for consecutive blocks, while kills from McCune and Bushendorf pushed the Blue Devils ahead 4-0. A Barton kill and a Phoebe Kim service ace sparked another Stout run, which included a Barton-McCune block and a McCune kill to extend the lead to 10-3. Hamline cut the margin to 16-10 and later 22-16, but Barton answered with a kill, Giffen and Barton combined on a block, and a Hamline attack error sealed the 25-16 set victory.
The Blue Devils again created early separation in the fourth set, building a 4-0 lead with blocks involving McCune, Hessel, Bushendorf and Barton, along with a Kline service ace. Stout extended the advantage to 10-4 on a Lainey Todd service ace. Hamline trimmed the margin to 15-12, but Horgan responded with a kill to halt the run. Barton added a kill to make it 21-16, and Kim served out the final four points. Blocks from Barton and McCune, followed by Barton and Horgan, helped UW-Stout close out the 25-16 set and secure the match.
