MOORHEAD, Minn. – At the end of a grueling three-game week and a long bus ride north, the UW–Stout men's hockey team showed its trademark resilience Saturday night, storming back from a four-goal deficit in the third period before falling 6–5 in overtime to Concordia-Moorhead.
The Cobbers jumped out early and carried play through the first two periods, building a commanding 5–1 lead late in the second. But if there's one constant for the Blue Devils this season, it's their ability to score quickly and in bunches — and they did just that in a wild third period.
UW–Stout got the comeback started at 3:16 of the third when Kullan Daikawa slipped behind the defense and snapped a shot five-hole to make it 5–2. Just over a minute later, Brendan Boyce put together a highlight-reel effort, dancing through a pair of Cobber defenders, tracking down his own rebound, and finishing in tight to pull Stout within two.
The momentum continued to swing midway through the period. At 10:38, Jake McAlpine spun and fired a turnaround shot from the high slot that beat the goalie blocker side, cutting the deficit to 5–4 and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
With the Blue Devils pressing late, Stout capitalized. Off a faceoff win, Nicolas Pigeon ripped a shot low glove side on the power play at the 17:00 mark to tie the game at five and complete the four-goal eruption.
The rally sent the game to overtime, but Concordia-Moorhead ended it at 2:27 of the extra session, finishing a two-on-one rush to earn the 6–5 victory.
Despite the result, UW–Stout showcased its offensive depth and resolve, outscoring the Cobbers 4–0 in the third period and battling until the final horn at the end of a demanding road swing.
