MENOMONIE, Wis. – UW-Stout faced one of the nation's most dangerous special teams Friday night, falling 4–1 to Gustavus Adolphus College at the Fanetti Community Center. The Gusties, who are receiving votes in the national poll, capitalized on their power-play opportunities in handing the Blue Devils their first home loss of the season.
The game was scoreless through the opening period as both teams traded chances without breaking through. Gustavus opened the scoring just 14 seconds into the second period, converting on the power play. The Gusties entered the night scoring on 26 percent of their power-play chances—among the best marks in Division III—and that efficiency proved decisive.
UW-Stout struggled to generate consistent offensive momentum against a disciplined Gustavus defense, while the visitors gradually built separation in the third period. Gustavus struck twice in the opening three minutes of the final frame, then added another power-play goal midway through the period to extend the lead.
The Blue Devils continued to battle and were rewarded late. Jake McAlpine created offense on his own at 18:19 of the third period, driving the puck to the net, following up his own rebound, and burying the chance to get UW-Stout on the scoreboard.
