ST. PETER, Minn. – The UW-Stout women's tennis team marked its first appearance at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships since 2012 this past weekend, competing in both singles and doubles play as part of the "Midwest Invite." The Blue Devils turned in several strong performances while testing themselves against elite regional competition.
In singles action, Molly Garber opened her tournament with a victory over an opponent from Carroll University to advance to the second round, where she fell to a Grinnell player who went on to capture the bracket title. Aspen Johnson put together a standout run, advancing to the semifinals after defeating an opponent from Macalester College. Johnson's tournament concluded with a loss to Brooklyn Steier of UW-Stevens Point.
Stout also impressed in doubles play. The pairing of Garber and Ashlyn Dellemann strung together back-to-back victories over St. Benedict and Hamline to advance to the semifinals, where they were defeated by the eventual champions from Grinnell. Johnson teamed up with Lindsay Leuzinger to earn a first-round win before falling to a squad from Concordia-Moorhead. Meanwhile, Prajna Hosamane and Gretchen Murphy delivered a program milestone, defeating Gustavus Adolphus College for the first time in Stout history. The duo advanced to the semifinals before dropping a narrow decision to the eventual champions from Grinnell.
The Blue Devils' weekend run marked an important step for the program as they reestablished their presence in the ITA Regional Championships for the first time in more than a decade.
