ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The UW-Stout women's soccer team fell behind early and couldn't complete a comeback, dropping a 5-2 decision to the College of Saint Benedict on Sunday afternoon at the CSB Turf Field.
Saint Benedict (3-5-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, with Summer Seamans opening the scoring at the 9:02 mark on an unassisted tally. Avery Soli added a penalty kick goal at 16:49 after a foul in the box, giving the hosts a comfortable cushion heading into the break.
The Bennies kept the pressure on after halftime, extending their lead to 4-0 with back-to-back goals early in the second period. Soli netted her second of the day at 50:55 off an assist from Addison Stephani, followed by Stephani's own goal at 57:38, assisted by Soli.
UW-Stout (5-3-1) showed resilience late, pulling two goals back in quick succession. Stauner broke through at 71:11, finishing a play set up by
Julia Fitt and
Tessa Pagel for her first career. Saint Benedict responded just over two minutes later to make it 5-1. Stauner added her second a minute later at 74:35, with
Emma Balsley providing the assist.
The Blue Devils were outshot 25-17 overall, with Saint Benedict holding a 15-8 edge in shots on goal.
Kaitlyn Krengel started in net for Stout and made eight saves in 65 minutes, taking the loss (3-2-0).
Claire Olson came on in relief and stopped two shots.
Stauner led Stout's offense with three shots, all on target, while
Kayla White added three shots of her own.
Mckenna Long,
Ava Tomas, and
Tessa Pagel each contributed two shots.
UW-Stout returns home for its next contest, hosting St. Olaf on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Nelson Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
