MENOMONIE – The UW-Stout women's soccer team moved to 1-0-1 with a hard-fought 1-1 tie against Gustavus Adolphus on Sunday afternoon at Nelson Field. The Blue Devils struck first but couldn't hold off a second-half equalizer from the Golden Gusties (1-0-1).
Stout wasted little time asserting pressure, outshooting Gustavus 7-3 in the opening half. The breakthrough came in the 19th minute when junior midfielder
Kayla White buried her first goal of the season, assisted by senior
Mckenna Long. White's strike from the edge of the box gave the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead heading into halftime, rewarding a dominant stretch that included several near-misses from
Anna Odisho and
Berklee Reelfs.
The Golden Gusties flipped the script after the break, ramping up their attack with 15 shots in the second half. Stout's defense held firm until the 63rd minute, when Haillee Wilson leveled the score at 1-1 with a clinical finish off a pass from Cambelle Waldspurger. Gustavus continued to press, but Blue Devil goalkeeper
Kristen Silenzi stood tall with six saves on the day, including key stops on shots from Wilson and Waldspurger in the final 10 minutes.
Statistically, Gustavus held edges in shots (18-13) and corners (3-5), but Stout matched them in shots on target (7-6). Reelfs led the Blue Devils with three shots, while White and Odisho each contributed multiple attempts. No yellow or red cards were issued in the cleanly played contest.
UW-Stout returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 3, hosting St. Catherine at 7 p.m. at Nelson Field.
