MENOMONIE (May 2, 2025) – The UW-Stout Blue Devils (14-24, 12-14 WIAC) fell in both games of a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader against the UW-Oshkosh Titans (27-11, 18-8 WIAC) at Nelson Field. The Titans won the opener 12-5 and secured a narrow 5-4 victory in the second game to complete the sweep.
Game 1: UW-Oshkosh 12, UW-Stout 5
The first game saw UW-Oshkosh scored 10 runs in the last three innings to break open a close game. The Titans took an early lead in the first when Logan Schill scored on a Jake Surane RBI groundout. Schill crossed the plate again in the third on another Surane RBI, making it 2-0.
UW-Stout responded in the third, tying the game at 2-2. Jack Redwine scored on an Austin Miller RBI single, and Leyten Bowers drove in Kevin Zanin with a single. The Blue Devils briefly took the lead in the fifth when Bowers singled to score Miller, putting Stout ahead 3-2.
UW-Oshkosh regained control in the seventh, plating for three runs. Schill delivered a two-RBI single, and a throwing error allowed Surane to score, making it 5-3. The Titans pulled away in the eighth with back-to-back homers by Mason Kirchberg and Schill, extending the lead to 7-3. In the ninth, Oshkosh added five more runs, in the ninth.
Stout scored a paiur in the ninth with a Miller RBI double and a Bowers RBI double, but the rally fell short at 12-5. Miller went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, while Bowers was 3-for-5 with two RBI. Zanin scored twice and stole a base.
Treysen Witt started for Stout, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits over 5.0 innings. Connor Brinkman earned the win for Oshkosh, pitching 7.0 innings and allowing three runs (one earned).
Game 2: UW-Oshkosh 5, UW-Stout 4
The second game was a nail-biter that went down to the final out. UW-Stout struck first in the bottom of the first when Justin Sedin homered to right field, scoring Bowers for a 2-0 lead. Sedin's homer tied a school record with 30 career home runs.
UW-Oshkosh answered with a four-run fourth inning. Housinger drove in a run with a fielder's choice, followed by a Brenden Max RBI double. Max scored on a wild pitch, and Kirchberg added an RBI double to give the Titans a 4-2 lead.
The Blue Devils tied the game in the fifth when Zanin hit a two-run homer to right, scoring Redwine to make it 4-4. Both teams' pitchers settled in, with Stout's Luke Carrier and Oshkosh's Connor Walters keeping the score level through the eighth.
In the ninth, Kirchberg reached base and scored the go-ahead run on a Schill RBI double. Stout put two runners on in the bottom half, but Oshkosh reliever Nick Rector induced a flyout to secure the 5-4 win.
Carrier pitched 8.2 innings for Stout, allowing five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Zanin led the offense, going 2-for-5 with a homer, two RBI, and a stolen base. Sedin also had two hits, including his homer, and two RBI.
The Blue Devils will close out the 2025 regular season tommorw, May 3 when they host UW-Oshkosh at Nelson Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
