MENOMONIE – The UW-Stout Blue Devils battled hard but dropped both games of a doubleheader against the top-ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks Sunday afternoon at Wakanda Park, with final scores of 6-3 and 8-6.
In the opener, Stout trailed 6-0 entering the eighth inning but rallied with three runs, highlighted by
Kevin Zanin's two-run homer and a run scored on a wild pitch. Despite the late push, Whitewater held firm to secure the 6-3 victory. Zanin led Stout with two hits, while pitcher
Treysen Witt threw 4.0 innings, allowing four runs.
The second game saw Stout jump to a 3-0 lead in the third, powered by Zanin's two-run homer and an RBI single from
Leyten Bowers. Whitewater responded with a four-run fourth and a three-run fifth to take control. Stout fought back, narrowing the gap to 8-5 in the eighth on an RBI single by
Austin Miller and adding a run in the ninth via Bowers' sacrifice fly, but fell short at 8-6. Zanin and
Parker Hagebock each had three hits, with Bowers contributing two RBI.
The Blue Devils (14-22, 12-12 WIAC) return to action on Friday, May 2, hosting a 1 p.m. double header against UW-Oshkosh at Nelson Field on campus.
