MENOMONIE – The UW-Stout Blue Devils baseball team splitting a doubleheader against the top-ranked UW-Whitewater Warhawks at Wakanda Park. The Blue Devils secured a thrilling 6-5 victory in Game 1, marking their first win over UW-Whitewater since the 2014 season, before falling 13-2 in Game 2.
Game 1: UW-Stout 6, UW-Whitewater 5
UW-Stout rallied late to stun the Warhawks in Game 1, ending a 10-year losing streak against the No. 1 team. The Blue Devils trailed 5-1 entering the seventh inning but erupted for four runs to tie the game.
Justin Sedin ignited the comeback with a solo home run to right-center, his team-leading shot that brought him one homer shy of tying the UW-Stout career record.
AJ Kargel and
Parker Hagebock scored on an error, followed by
Jake Thomas crossing the plate on a double from Kyler Zanin to knot the score at 5-5. In the eighth, Leyton Bowers sparked the go-ahead rally, advancing to second on a wild pitch before scoring on a clutch double by
Austin Miller, giving Stout a 6-5 lead.
The Blue Devils' pitching staff held firm, with starter
Luke Carrier tossing 6 innings allowing seven hits and striking out four. Relievers
Nathan Weckop earned the win and
Drew Buss earned the save, retiring the Warhawks in order in the ninth to seal the victory. Bowers led Stout with two hits and two runs scored, while Sedin's homer and Miller's game-winning double paced the offense.
Game 2: UW-Whitewater 13, UW-Stout 2 (7 Inn.)
The Warhawks bounced back in Game 2, with a 13-2 seven inning win. UW-Whitewater's offense exploded for 16 hits, including five home runs.
UW-Stout managed six hits,
Austin Miller drove in Bowers in the fourth and sixth for Stout's runs.
