STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stout Blue Devils (9-13, 7-5) split a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader against the UW-Stevens Point Pointers (11-11, 6-6) Saturday at Zimmerman Field, dropping the opener 8-2 before rebounding with a 7-1 victory.
Game 1: UW-Stevens Point 8, UW-Stout 2
The Pointers took control early in the first game, capitalizing on offensive outbursts in the third and fifth innings to secure an 8-2 win. UW-Stevens Point struck first in the third, plating four runs, highlighted by a three-run homer. They added four more in the fifth, powered by another three-run homer.
The Blue Devils broke through in the sixth when
Parker Hagebock scored on
Leyten Bowers' RBI single, cutting the deficit to 8-1. Stout added a second run in the ninth on
Kevin Zanin's RBI single, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback. Zanin led Stout at the plate, going 2-for-5 with an RBI, while
AJ Kargel added a pair of hits.
Game 2: UW-Stout 7, UW-Stevens Point 1
The Blue Devils bounced back convincingly in the second game, riding strong pitching and timely hitting to a 7-1 win.
Treysen Witt delivered a gem, tossing seven scoreless innings, scattering four hits, and striking out one to earn the win and improve to 3-0.
Nick Van Beek closed out the game, allowing one run over two innings.
Stout opened the scoring in the third, as
Justin Schnell scored on Bowers' RBI single, followed by
Justin Sedin's RBI single to make it 2-0. The Blue Devils broke the game open in the seventh, pushing across three runs, with
Austin Miller's bases-loaded single and a two-run hit by Sedin proving pivotal. Stout tacked on two more in the eighth, courtesy of Bowers' RBI triple and another Sedin RBI single.
Sedin paced the offense, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Bowers went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Miller and Kargel each added two hits, and Schnell contributed a double. The Blue Devils outhit the Pointers 11-6, capitalizing on seven walks drawn off Stevens Point pitching.
