Falcons top Blue Devils in final matchup of season

MENOMONIE (January 4, 2025) - In the third and final matchup against UW-River Falls (8-5-0, 4-3-0 WIAC) the Falcons scored two quick goals in the third period to regain the lead and hold on to win 4-3. UW-Stout (6-6-1, 2-4-1 WIAC) scored three goals in the second period, but came up short on the comeback in the third period. 

After 10 minutes into the first period, shots were at 6-6 and after the first period, Stout led in shots 12-11. After one period, no power plays and no goals were accounted for. 

But only 1:42 into the second period, River Falls scored the first goal of the game. Alex Atwill beat Green on the goal with assists from Ethan Lindahl and Anthony Biniaris. 

At 10:10 of the period, the Falcon's Jonny Meiers scored to make the game 2-0 in favor of River Falls. 

The first penalty came at 11:38 and the Blue Devils were heading on a much needed power play to take the momentum. At 12:20, Hayden Stocks scored the power play goal to get within one goal. The goal was assisted by Boyd Stahlbahm. 

With Stout still trailing by one goal, Maksis Brimanis scored his first goal of the season to tie the game up at two at 13:08 of the period. The goal was assisted by Nicolas Pigeon

At 13:50 of the second period, both teams skated four on four, but no goals were scored. After the four on four hockey, Stout went on a three minute power play after a Falcon's five minute major before the four on four. At 16:22 of the second period, Stout took the lead when Jacob Halvorson scored the power play goal with an assist from Stahlbahm and the Blue Devils were leading 3-2 going into the third period. 

After two periods, Stout led in shots 29-18. 

After being down 3-2, the Falcons scored two quick goals in the first 1:13 of the third period to regain the lead. The tying goal was scored by Dylan Smith with assists from Tyler Lee and Max Collette at 21 seconds in the third period. The go ahead goal was scored by Atwill with an assist from Aidan Torres to make the game 4-3 at 1:13 of the period. 

River Falls went on their first power play at 1:50 of the third period, but Stout's penalty kill killed off the penalty. 

With 18 minutes left in the period, the Blue Devils were fighting to get a game tying goal, but came up short. With 2:24 left in the period, Stout pulled Green to skate six skaters, but could not get the puck in the back of the net and the Falcons won 4-3. 

Stout's Dawson Green started the game and stopped 27 Falcon shots. River Falls' Brennan Boynton started in net and stopped 33 of the Blue Devil's shots. 

Up next for the Blue Devils is a non-conference matchup against Augsburg University in Menomonie, WI with a puck drop at 7:00 p.m.
