Box Score MENOMONIE (September 5, 2024) - The Blue Devils opened their 2024 season at Don and Nona Williams stadium against the Pioneers of Carroll University. But the Pioneers came out with the road win 28-16.
Carroll University (1-0) received the kickoff to start the 2024 season and UW-Stout (0-1) stopped the Pioneers in three plays.
The Blue Devil's first offensive possession of the season also resulted in a three and out. The Pioneers second possession again resulted in a three and out.
Stout got their first, first down on the next possession. But the next play, a muffed handoff resulted in a fumble and Carroll would fall on it. The Pioneers started their possession at Stout's 27 yard line.
Carroll got on the scoreboard first when Caden Pendleton threw the ball to Cameron Evans for a five yard touchdown to make the game 7-0.
In the next Blue Devils possession, Stout's
Luke Cool kicked a 35 yard field goal to make the game 7-3 in favor of the Pioneers.
With 5:21 left in the second quarter, Blue Devil's
Reese Turner scored the first touchdown for Stout when he rushed in to get into the endzone to take the lead.
The next possession, Carroll's Caden Pendleton threw the football in the endzone to Sammy Muth to change the lead once again. The Pioneers regained the lead 14-10.
With time ticking down to halftime, Stout tried to get the lead going into the locker room. But ended up punting back to Carroll. During the punt, the Pioneers blocked the punt and started at their 49 yard line. With 12 seconds left in the half, Pendleton threw another touchdown to Cameron Evans to make the game 21-10 at halftime.
The Blue Devils started with the ball to start the half, but an interception was thrown to give the ball back to Carroll. After the interception, both teams punted to each other and no scores went on the scoreboard.
Until Stout's
Adam Moen threw a long touchdown to
Carter Zezulka for a 70 touchdown to make the score 21-16 in favor of the Pioneers.
After three quarters, the Blue Devils were down five to go into the final quarter.
But with 12:03 left in the game, Carroll's Pendleton threw his fourth touchdown of the game to Santiago Rios for a 27 yard touchdown. The game was now 28-16.
The Blue Devils were fighting to find the endzone to make it a one score game, but couldn't find that spark to get going as the final score ended with the Pioneers up top 28-16.
Stout's
Adam Moen led the air attack with 222 yards and one touchdown. Moen also added 58 yards on the ground. Carroll's Caden Pendleton finished with 212 yards and four touchdowns.
Blue Devil's
Carter Zezulka led in the air with 72 receiving yards and a touchdown. Carroll's Reed Breckheimer had five receptions for 61 yards. Cameron Evans had nine yards for two touchdowns.
On defense, Stout's
Brooks Brewer finished the game with a team led 12 tackles.
Up next for the Blue Devils is an away matchup against Dickinson State on September 14 with the kickoff at 2 p.m. Stout will be back home on September 21 when they take on University of Northwestern (MN) at 6 p.m.
