Stout handles the Eagles of Northwestern 56-19

MENOMONIE (September 21, 2024) - The Blue Devils scored on the first four possessions of the game and never trailed as they beat the Eagles of Northwestern 56-19. 

On the first possession for UW-Stout (2-1), Chase Hughes scored a one yard touchdown on a run to get the Blue Devils on the scoreboard. 

University of Northwestern-St. Paul (0-3) also scored on their first possession when Caden Cantrell threw a touchdown pass to Jaylen Brown at the end of the first quarter. The Eagle's two point conversion was unsuccessful and the score still saw the Blue Devils up 7-6. 

Stout's second possession also ended with a one yard rushing touchdown, this time from Ben Tolkinen. The Blue Devils third possession ended with a pass from Adam Moen to Chase Hughes for a touchdown to take a 21-6 lead. 

At 10:59 of the second quarter, Northwestern answered back with a 50 yard touchdown throw from Cantrell to Brown. Another failed two point conversion made the game 21-12. 

The Blue Devil's fourth possession saw Moen throw his second touchdown of the game, this time to Bennett Lecher

The Eagles had 40 seconds to try and march down the field to get points before the half. But a three and out from the Northwestern offense had the Blue Devils offense back on the field with only 6 seconds left. Moen threw a long pass from the 50 yard line to the endzone, but was intercepted in the middle of the endzone by the Northwestern defender to make the game 28-12 at halftime. 

Northwestern started with the ball in the third quarter. And took a five yard run by Cantrell to score the touchdown. 

On Stout's first possession of the second half, the Blue Devils fumbled the football to give back the ball to the Eagles. But on the next play of the game, Blue Devil's Brooks Brewer intercepted the pass. 

Stout took the ball 94 yards to score the next touchdown. Moen threw a pass to Bennett Lecher to make the game 35-19. 

Northwestern tried fighting back in the game, but in their next possession, Blue Devil's Cooper Diedrich picked off a pass and took it to the endzone for a 42 yard pick six. 

With 54 seconds left in the third quarter, Reese Turner scored on an 11 yard touchdown run to reach 49-19 in favor of Stout. 

At 6:10 of the fourth quarter Sebastian Smith picked off a pass and took it to the endzone for the Blue Devil's second pick six. This time for 82 yards to make the final of the game 56-19 at Don and Nona Williams Stadium. 

For the Blue Devils, Adam Moen led in the air with 220 yards passing and three touchdowns. Moen also added 40 yards on the ground. Eagle's Caden Cantrell finished with 196 and two touchdowns. 

Stout's Chase Hughes led the attack on the ground with 58 rushing yards. While Northwestern's Sivert Klefsaas led the Eagles with 47 yards. 

In the air, Bennett Lecher led the Blue Devils with 86 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Eagle's Jaylen Brown finished with 92 yards and two touchdowns. 

The Blue Devils are on a bye September 28, but will be back in action on October 5 when they go on the road at UW-Stevens Point in the first WIAC matchup.
