MENOMONIE – Luke Cool made five field goals to lift the Blue Devils to a 22-15 win over UW-Stevens Point at Community Stadium at Goerke Field to open WIAC play Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Devils (3-1, 1-0) won their eighth straight game over the Pointers (1-3, 0-1), holding Stevens Point to just 264 total yards of offense.
Stout wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.
Davonte Evans returned the opening kickoff 46 yards to the Pointers 48-yard line.
Adam Moen found
Carter Zezulka down the middle on the first play from scrimmage to give Stout the early 7-0 lead.
The teams traded punts on their next drives and
Dawson Goodman ended the UWSP drive with an interception in the endzone.
The game remained scoreless until Stout put a 16-play 62-yard drive together that culminated in a
Luke Cool 30-yard field goal to give Stout a 10-0 lead with 1:46 left to play before halftime.
The Blue Devils forced a UWSP three and out and used the short field and drove down the 14 setting up Cool's second field goal of the quarter. Cool split the uprights as time expired and the Blue Devils led 13-0 heading into the locker room.
Stevens Point fumbled the opening kickoff of the third quarter and
Carson Tait jumped on the loose ball to set up Stout just outside the red zone. Stout was unable to punch the ball into the endzone and settled for a 21-yard Cool field goal to take a 16-0 lead.
The Pointers ensuing possession went deep into Stout' s territory, but the Blue Devil defense held strong stopping UWSP on a fourth and two from inside the 10. Stout then put a 12-play 67-yard drive together and Cool hit his fourth field goal of the day, this time from 36 yards out, and Stout lead 19-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
Stevens Point was finally able to cash in on a long drive, going 73 yards on 11 plays to score their first touchdown, they converted on the two-point conversion to cut the Stout lead to 19-8.
Stout responded with 10-play drive that stalled inside the 10. Cool made his fifth field goal of the game to give Stout a 22-8 lead with 6:22 left to play.
Point again drove the length of the field and scored on a 16-yard touchdown pass with 1:06 left on the clock wo pull with seven at 22-15.
Stout recovered the onside kick but went three and out and UWSP took over at their own 20-yard line with 43 seconds left to play following the Stout punt.
Gavin Goodman ended the game with an interception near midfield.
The Blue Devils rushed for 185 yards,
Dylan Nelson carried the ball 14 times for 63 yards,
Chase Hughes was 17 for 61 yards and
Adam Moen rushed for 55 yards on eight carried. Moen was 13-24 for 147 yards and touchdown. Defensively,
Brooks Brewer had nine tackles and
Blaine Seidl had eight tackles and a tackle for loss.

Cool now was 36 career field goals and is tied for second all-time with Drew Pearson. And 10 back of Ricky Marteney's 46. Cool also has 104 career PAT's, five back of Evan Larsen's 109.
