Blue Devil Baseball Splits War on 94 Doubleheader with UW-Eau Claire

MENOMONIE – The UW-Stout baseball team split a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Nelson Field. Winning game one 14—6 and falling in game two 20-9.
 
GAME ONE
The Blue Devils took game one 14-6, raking 17 hits in the win. Dak Doyle allowed two runs on six hits over 5.1 innings two pick up the win and Connor Hemme pitched 3.1 innings in relief to earn the save on senior day.

The Blugolds struck first, hitting the first pitch of the game over the center field fence for a quick 1-0 lead. But the Blue Devils would regroup and hold UWEC to just one more run over the next six innings.

Drew Reis singled to drive in Jack Schirpke to even the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second. Justin Sedin singled to leadoff the third and advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt by the Blugold pitcher. Jack Redwine followed with a single to score Sedin from second base. Jacoby Endreas then double to left to score Redwine to give Stout a 3-1 lead after three.
Reis and Kyler Hove led off the fourth with back-to-back singles. AJ Kargel then singled to center to score Reis but was out trying to advance to second. Sedin homered to center to give the Blue Devils a 6-1 advantage.

UWEC homered in the top of the fifth pull with in 6-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Riley Boushack homered to right and Sedin hit a triple to right to drive in two more runs. Redwine then singled to left to score Sedin and Stout lead 10-2. UWEC scored three in the sixth, scoring off a two-out error and then a two RBI single before ending the inning tagging the runner trying to advance. In the Bottom of the sixth, Stout scored four more to take control at 14-5. With the bases loaded, Kargel singled to drive in Leyton Bowers. Sedin worked a walk to score Boushack and Redwine added another RBI on a single to right scoring Hove. Endreas then hit a sacrifice fly to deep left to score Karel and give Stout a 14-5 lead after six.

Sedin finished a double short of the cycle, going 3-4 with five RBI and two walks. Redwine was 3-6 with three RBI. Reis was 3-5 and Kargel and Endreas each had two base hits.
 
GAME TWO
An eight run first inning, kickstarted the Blugolds to a 20-9 win in game two. UWEC totaled 21 hits in the win.
The first four Blugold batters reached and scored, as UWEC hit three home runs in the top half of the inning to score eight runs on seven hits. AJ Kargel led off the bottom of the first, with a homer to center to get Stout on the board. But UWEC scored in each of the first five innings and Stout's offense struggled to match pace.
Trailing 10-1 in the bottom of the second, Kyler Hove and Justin Sedin hit RBI singles to cut into the lead and trail 10-3. The Blugolds scored two more in the third and one in the fourth to lead 14-3. Boushack, Kyler Hove and Kargel singled in the bottom of the fourth, with Boushack scoring on Kargel's single to left. Sedin then hit a three-run homer to cut the Blugold lead to 14-7. Collin Hageman reached on a dropped popup and Jack Schirpke followed with a two-run shot to center and Stout was back in the game at 14-9. However, Eau Claire added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 16-9 advantage and added a pair of runs in the eighth and ninth to take a 20-9 lead. Stout only managed three hits in the final five innings as UWEC would go on to win to split the series.

Boushack finished 3-4. Hove Sedin and Kargel each had two hits. The Blue Devils are now 11-17 and 6-14 in WIAC play and are sitting fifth in the conference standings.
 
UP NEXT
The Blue Devils will host Saint Mary's University on Tuesday, April 23. First pitch from Nelson Field is set for 3 p.m.
