MENOMONIE - A 10-goal second period lifted UW-Eau Claire 21-7 past UW-Stout in a
WIAC women's lacrosse
matchup at Nelson Field Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Devils (3-10, 0-5) trailed by just a goal after 15 minutes of play at 3-2. But a 10-goal second period by the Blugolds (10-3, 2-2) provided the lead for UW-Eau Claire to win 21-7.
After falling behind just 1:37 into the game,
Emma Mathews scored her 29th goal of the season to tie the game at a goal apiece. 16 seconds later UWEC took back the lead and added another midway through the period to lead 3-1. Mathews scored her 30th of the year with 40 seconds left to bring Stout within one. The Blue Devils nearly tied the game 15 seconds later, but the shot rang of the crossbar and Stout trialed 3-2 after first period. UWEC scored four quick goals in a 1:14 span to open the second period and totaled seven unanswered over the opening 5:44 to take a 10-2 lead before Mathews netted her hat trick goal at with 8:34 left on the clock. UWEC scored the next three to take a 13-3 halftime lead. The
Blugolds scored the first six goals of the third period before
Lilly Thomas netted her fifth of the season with under a minute left to play in the third. Mathews scored her fourth of the game and 32nd of the season two minutes into the four and Stout trailed 19-5.
Mai Nou Vang scored her 20th of the season with 6:25 left and Ally
Crymble scored her 19th a minute later.
The
Blugolds led Stout in shots 45-23, draw controls 21-9, and ground balls 33-24.
