Home Runs Propel Blue Devils to Sweep of UW-Stevens Point

MENOMONIE – The UW-Stout Blue Devils hit six home runs to sweep a double header with UW-Stevens Point Sunday afternoon.

GAME ONE
Jack Redwine and Leyton Bowers hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk off the 24th ranked Pointers. 7-6. All of Stout's runs came courtesy of the long ball. UWSP took the lead in the top of the second with a two-out homer to center. Stout responded in the bottom half of the inning, with a pair of two-out round trippers. Riley Boushack drove one to right center and Kyler Hove followed with a long shot to center. The home run was Hove's first collegiate hit. The Pointers tied the game at two in the top of the third with a homer to right. Stout again answered in the bottom half of the inning when Jacoby Endreas drilled a ball to center to score Justin Sedin who reached on a double down the left field line. UWSP scored a couple of runs on a walk and two bloop hits to tie the game at four in the fourth. AJ Kargel gave Stout the lead again in the sixth with an RBI single up the middle to score Boushack. But the Pointers drew even in the top of the seventh on an RBI double to right center. UWSP led off the ninth with a homer to left. In the bottom of the ninth, Jack Redwine tied the game with a pinch-hit bomb to right field and Leyton Bowers followed with the walk-off to center. Connor Hemme picked up the win in two innings of relief. Lucas Lendosky pitched six innings scattering five hits and giving up four runs. Kargel was 3-3 with a double and a walk. Boushack and Sedin were both 2-4.

GAME TWO
Drew Buss threw six innings and the Blue Devils had 10 hits in a 7-3 win in game two. AJ Kargel continued his on base streak in his first at bat of game two, driving in Riley Boushack with a single to left. Stout kept a 1-0 lead until the top of the fifth when the Pointers hit a two-run homer to take the lead. Stout responded in the bottom of the inning. Parker Hagebock led off with a double down the left field line. Jack Schirpke moved him to third on a sacrifice bunt. Justin Sedin singled through the left side to tie the game at two. Leyton Bowers drew a walk and Drew Ries reached on a fielder's choice and then advanced to third on a throwing error that allowed Sedin to scored. Riley Boushack then reached on a sac bunt attempt that the pitcher bobbled, allowing Bowers to score to give Stout a 4-2 lead. UWSP got a run back in the sixth on a lead off homer to left. But the Blue Devils answered again right away, scoring two off of a Schirpke sacrifice fly and a Jack Redwine RBI single.  Sedin added an insurance run with a homer to left center in the eighth to give Stout a 7-3 lead. Quintin Gonzalez pitched three innings on hit ball in relief to earn the save. Sedin, Boushack and Schirpke each had two hits for the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils will host UW-La Crosse on Wednesday, April 17. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
