MENOMONIE (February 16, 2024) - In the first round of the WIAC Men's Ice Hockey Tournament/Commissioner's Cup (Presented by Culver's), the Blue Devils took the first game against Northland College (1-25-0) behind a
Dawson Green shutout and seven goals by Stout's offense.
In the first period, UW-Stout (11-13-2) got on the board first at 9:11 when
Kobe Keller scored and beat the Lumberjack's goalie. The goal was assisted by
Tyler Sanborn and
Peyton Hart.
The second goal in the first period came from Stout's
Kullan Daikawa with assists from
Jake McAlpine and
Gunner Moore. The goal came at 13:49 of the period.
At 17:22 of the first period, the Blue Devil's scored their third goal by
Matt Dahlseide and was assisted by
Caleb Serre.
At the end of the first period, the Blue Devil's saw a commanding lead at 3-0 against the Lumberjacks. Shots were in favor of Stout 10-9.
The Lumberjacks had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard when a player broke free and had a breakaway, but
Dawson Green shut the deke down and the game remained 3-0.
The first power play of the game came at 10:05 of the second period. Stout's penalty kill stood well and cleared off the man advantage by the Lumberjacks.
After two periods, shots were still in favor of the Blue Devils 23-21.
At 1:13 of the third period, Northland went on their second power play, but Stout killed off the penalty.
The game saw its first four on four action at 5:24, but no goals were awarded.
At 8:02 of the third period, Stout went on their first power play and would skate five on three. During the five on three, the Blue Devils scored at 9:27 when
Sam Kroon scored the power play goal with assists from
Nicolas Pigeon and McAlpine. Stout skated five on four for 3:30, but didn't score a goal to keep the game 4-0.
At 14:15, the Blue Devils took a 5-0 lead when Pigeon scored with assists from
Tyler Sanborn and
Boyd Stahlbaum.
Stout's
Noe Perez tacked on two goals, the first one at 14:30 with assists from
Dylan Rallis and
Maksis Brimanis. The second Perez goal came at 17:23 with an assist from Hart to make the final 7-0.
The Blue Devil's
Dawson Green tallied a shutout win stopping 24 of Northland's shots. Lumberjack's Viktor Wennberg started the game and stopped 25. Andrew Yocum came in relief for Northland with 5:30 left in the game.
The Blue Devils will face off against Northland College tomorrow night, February 17 at the Fanetti Community Center with a puck drop at 7:00 p.m.
