MENOMONIE (December 13, 2024) - In the first matchup against River Falls in the season, the Falcons came back from two goals in the third period to force overtime. But it was Daikawa's overtime goal that sealed the win for the Blue Devils. This game was the third straight game the Blue Devils saw an overtime period.
Only 1:29 into the game, UW-Stout (5-4-1, 2-2-1 WIAC) went on their first power play, but UW-River Falls (6-4-0, 2-3-0 WIAC) killed off the penalty.
With both teams trying to break the 0-0 tie and get the first goal of the game, it was the Blue Devils that got on the board first.
Gunner Moore got it through from the point and found the back of the net. The Moore goal was assisted by
Nicholas Stevens to take the 1-0 lead.
After one period, Stout led in shots 16-9 against the Falcons.
In the second period, the Falcons tied the game at 5:23 of the period when Dylan Smith beat Matsternak and the game was tied at 1-1.
But Stout took the lead back at 6:47 when
Brendan Boyce scored his first goal of the season with the assist coming from Moore and
Kullan Daikawa.
The Blue Devils went on a power play at 13:13 of the period. On the power play chance, Stout's Daikawa beat the Falcon's goalie to take a 3-1 lead. The power play goal was assisted by
Noe Perez and
Tyler Masternak.
After two periods, Stout was outshooting the Falcons 29-17.
In the third period, the Blue Devils had two power play chances in the first 10 minutes to extend the lead, but the Falcons killed off both penalties.
At 14:42 of the third period, River Falls went on their first power play. Falcon's Max Collette scored the power play goal to get within one. Reid Lune assisted on the goal at 15:01.
With two minutes left in the game, River Falls pulled their goalie to skate an extra defender. With 48 seconds left in the game, the Falcon's Cole Teleki scored the game tying goal and the game was heading into overtime.
During the three on three overtime period, Stout controlled the puck for most of the time. At 2:18 of overtime, Stout's Daikawa scored his second goal of the game with assists from Perez and Stevens to win 4-3.
Tyler Masternak started in goal for the Blue Devils stopping 31 shots. Falcon's Brennan Boynton stopped 32 shots.
