MENOMONIE (November 8, 2024) - The Blue Devils earned their second win of the season as they defeated the Cardinals of Saint Mary's University (1-2-0) by the score of 3-2.
It only took UW-Stout (2-0-0) 2:45 in the game to get on the scoreboard when
Gunner Moore found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. The goal was assisted by
Brendan Boyce as the Blue Devils were up 1-0.
Just 32 seconds later, Stout found themselves on their first power play of the game. As time was winding down on the power play, Stout had chances to score, but ultimately, Saint Mary's killed off the penalty.
But only two seconds after the penalty kill, Stout's Nicolas Stevens scored his first career goal for the Blue Devils. The time of the goal was 5:19 and was assisted by
Maksis Brimanis.
St. Mary's went on their first power play at 6:41 of the period, but Stout's penalty kill stood up and killed off the penalty to keep the lead at 2-0.
At the end of the first period, the Blue Devil's led in shots 11-4.
In the second period, the Cardinals went on their second power play at 3:00. Stout successfully killed off another penalty and both teams skated full strength.
At 9:26 of the period, Blue Devil's
Hayden Stocks scored his first career goal to make the game 3-0. The goal was assissted by
Boyd Stahlbaum and
Nicolas Pigeon.
But only 14 seconds later, the Cardinals scored their first goal of the night. At 9:40 of the period, St. Mary's Jake Cameron scored to make the game 3-1. The goal was assisted by Marc Fletemeyer.
Stout would go on their second power play at 14:29, but could not find the back of the net.
After two periods, Stout led in shots 23-7.
In the third period, St. Mary's had three power plays from 2:38 and 11:46 of the period to try to get back to a one goal game. But Stout's penalty kill showed grit and killed off each penalty.
But at 15:13, St. Mary's Laudon Poellinger made it a one goal game when he beat Blue Devil's Mastermak. The goal was assisted by Colin Tushie and Joona Juntunen to make the game 3-2.
As the Cardinals were trying to make a comeback, Stout went on a power play with 2:14 left in the game. During the Blue Devil's power play, St. Marys pulled their goalie to make the game five on five with an empty net. After the killed penalty, the Cardinals skated six on five for 14 seconds. But was unable to tie the game and the Blue Devils held onto the lead for a 3-2 win.
Stout's
Tyler Masternak started in net, earning the win and stopped 12 Cardinals shots. St. Mary's AJ Ruskowski started and stopped 26 Blue Devil shots.
Up next for the Blue Devils is another non-conference match up against the Pipers of Hamline University on Saturday, November 9 with puck drop at 7:00 p.m.
