Blue Devils beat #8 Warhawks for the first time since 2001

MENOMONIE (October 12, 2024) - The Blue Devils went in today losing the last 21 contests against the Warhawks. Until today, when Stout defeated #8 Whitewater. A full team effort by the Blue Devils saw themselves leading at the end of the game 29-27 and their first win against UW-Whitewater since 2001. 

UW-Stout (4-1, 2-0 WIAC) received the ball first to start the game. But on third down, the Blue Devils coughed up the ball and UW-Whitewater (3-2, 1-1 WIAC) recovered the ball on Stout's 36 yard line. 

Whitewater's first possession of the game ended with a field goal by Jackson Fox to get the first points on the scoreboard. 

Next kickoff, the Blue Devil's Patrick Corcoran caught the ball at the ten yard line and returned the kick to Whitewater's 37 yard line. Stout's Luke Cool kicked a 35 yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3. 

During the next kickoff, Whitewater's Tyler Vasey returned it 95 yards for a Warhawk touchdown to regain the lead 10-3. 

The next drive for the Blue Devil's was a 12 play, 5:29, and 75 yard possession that ended with a Adam Moen two yard touchdown to tie the game. 

Whitewater's next possession took only one play when Jason Ceniti threw a long pass to Brian Wilterdink for a 73 yard touchdown to take a 17-10 lead. 

To start the second quarter, Stout's Luke Cool kicked his second field goal of the game, this one from 38 yards to make the game 17-13 in favor of the Warhawks. 

The next possession for Whitewater ended when the Blue Devil's fell on the football during a botched option play and started on the Warhawks 26 yard line. With great field possession, Moen scored his second rushing touchdown, this one from four yards to have the Blue Devils up for the first time in the game 20-17. 

With 3:48 left in the half, Fox hit his second field goal at 39 yards to tie the game 20-20. Blue Devil's Cool made a 26 yard field goal with 1:09 left in the half to regain the lead 23-20 going into halftime. 

The first possession of the second half belonged to Whitewater. But Stout's Richie Murphy had other plans as Murphy interecepted a pass from Ceniti in Blue Devil's territory. 

Stout's first possession ended with a 25 yard field goal by Cool to make the game 26-20. The field goal were the only points in the third quarter. 

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Cool made his fifth field goal of the game, this one from 40 yards to make the game 29-20. 

With 9:44 left in the game, Warhawk's Fox missed a 45 yard field goal. 

At 8:09 left in the game, Richie Murphy intercepted his second ball of the game to give the Blue Devils offense time to run out some clock. 

Blue Devil's offense had three key first downs to run the clock off to 3:51. 

With the Warhawks down nine points, Ceniti hit Tamir Thomas on a 57 yard touchdown to make the game 29-27 in favor of the Blue Devils with only 3:02 left in the game. 

As Stout was trying to chew off some clock, with 1:15 left in the game, the Blue Devils had a field goal attempt, but for the first time in the game, it was no good. 

Whitewater trailed by two points with 1:10 left in the game and started on their own 29 yard line. The Warhawks got a quick first down and was moving down the field. Until Braxton Munnikhuysen sacked Ceniti to back them up more with the clock winding down. On fourth down and 13 with 14 seconds left, Whitewater couldn't capitlize and the Blue Devils came away with the victory at home. 

Blue Devil's Adam Moen led the passing attack with 273 yards and also led in rushing with 83 yards and two touchdowns. Whitewater's Jason Ceniti ended the game with 281 yards and two touchdowns. 

Whitewater's Brian Wilterdink led in reception yards with 113 including a touchdown. Blue Devil's Tucker Haakonson ended with 67 yards, while Patrick Corcoran had 59 yards.

Cool now has 41 career field goals and is five field goals back of Ricky Marteney's 46. Cool also has 106 career PAT's, three back of Evan Larsen's 109.
