LA CROSSE – Brooke McCune tied a school record with 28 kills to lead the Blue Devils to a five-set win over UW-La Crosse Wednesday night at Mitchell Hall.
Brooke McCune had 28 kills, hitting .417, tying the school mark set in 1991 by Jen Carter and Tori Fiet in 1999.
With the win, Stout improved to 12-11 and 3-3 in WIAC play and moved into a three-way tie for fourth place with one conference game left to play before the WIAC Tournament.
The first point of the match was a Stout service error, their first of 13 on the night. But the Blue Devils rebounded and quickly pulled within a point a 4-3. A 7-3 Eagle run broke the set open. Stout responded, pulling with two at 14-13. But UWL quickly build the lead back up to five at 20-15 and took the first set 25-19. McCune hit .750 with six kills in the set, as Stout hit .207 to UWL's .407, and had five serving errors in the first.
Stout started the second set on a 6-1 run. But the upset minded Eagles bounced back to take a 10-9 lead. After trading points, three-straight kills from McCune gave Stout a 16-13 lead. Four Eagle attacking errors down the stretch and a -.020 team hitting percentage helped push Stout to a big 10-point set win to even the match at one. McCune totaled seven of Stout 12 kills in the set.
The third set saw 10 ties and five lead changes before La Crosse went on a 5-1 run to open a 20-15 lead before taking a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 win.
Three kills apiece from McCune and
Kyra Giffen helped Stout build and early 10-4 lead in the fourth set. In all, McCune had eight and Giffen added six kills to lead Stout to a 25-19 win and force a deciding set.
Tied a six early in the fifth,
Kailey Kline found a soft spot in the UWL defense, serving three aces to give Stout a 10-6 lead and forced a UWL timeout. Two more kills from Giffen gave Stout a 13-10 lead and McCune finished the match with her 28
th kill of the match.
McCune's 28 was the fifth time this season she has recorded 20 or more kills. Giffen finished with nine kills in her three sets played.
Kennedy Barret had a season-high 48 assists, added 12 kills, four kills and two blocks.
Stout as a team had 80 digs, led by
Terrah Moshier's 22.
Maja Anderson added 12 and
Kailey Kline had 11, while Stephane Petrbok had eight.
Brynn Hessel had four blocks and five kills.
Emma Barton added three more blocks. Barrett and
Sloan Horgan each had two blocks.
As a team, Stout hit .203 for the match, staying consistent offensively, hitting nearly the same percentage in every set.

The Blue Devils are off until next Wednesday, Nov. 6, when they travel to St. Paul, Minn. to play Hamline University. First serve from Hutton Arena is set for 7 p.m.
