Blue Devils Top Hamline in Four Sets

SAINT PAUL – The UW-Stout volleyball team rallied for a four-set win over Hamline University Wednesday night at Hutton Arena

The Blue Devils (13-11, 3-3) rolled to a four-set win (15-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-16) after dropping the first set to the Pipers (9-18, 2-8).

Stout struggled in the first set, hitting just .028, Hamline had 16 kills in the opening frame to take the set 15-15.

The second set saw 11 tied and five lead changes. Tied at six, Hamline rattled off six straight points to take a 12-6 lead. Trailing 14-10, Stout responded with a 7-0 run, aided by two aces from Kennedy Barrett to lead 17-14. Hamline rallied to tie the set at 17, 20 and 22. But a block by Barrett and Brynn Hessel gave Stout set point and Hessel evened the match at a set apiece with a kill.

The third set started even, tied at six Stout went on a 9-4 run to take a 15-10 lead. Hamline would not get any closer than four points as Stout rolled to a 25-18 win behind three more blocks and two service aces.

Stout took an early 3-2 lead in the fourth set and never looked back as the quickly took a 10-5 lead. In a flash, Stout was up 18-10 and easily closed out the set. Two kills by Kyra Giffen and a game ending block by Giffen and Hessel sealed the win.
Stout totaled 12 total team blocks. Hessel led the way with six. Emma Barton had five and Giffen finished with three.

Brooke McCune led the Blue Devil offense with 14 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Giffen added eight kills and Sloan Horgan and Barton each had six.

Kennedy Barrett had 26 assists, 10 digs and three aces. Terrah Moshier had a team-high 18 digs.  
 
UP NEXT
The Blue Devils will close out the 2024 regular season on Friday, Nov. 8 when they host UW-Whitewater. First serve from the Johnson Fieldhouse is set for 7 p.m. After the match, there will be a short ceremony honoring the four seniors.
