Blue Devils Sweep Their Way to 4-0 Start

GRINNELL, Iowa. - The Blue Devils improved to 4-0 with a pair of 3-0 sweeps on the second day of the Central College/Grinnell College Invitational. For the first time since 2002 Stout has started the season with four straight 3-0 sweeps.

The Basics Game 1
Score: UW-Stout 3 – Grinnell College 0 (25-23, 25-18, 26-24)
Record: Blue Devils (3-0), Pioneers (2-1)
Location: Darby Gymnasium 

The Blue Devils won a evenly played match against host Grinnell College. Neither team held more than a two point advantage during the first set Sidney Hoverman had three kills to end the first set for the Blue Devils. The second set started close going back and forth until the Blue Devils closed on an 8-2 run to win 25-18. Grinnel jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third set but the Blue Devils were able to rally and tie the set at 11 and eventually take a 14-11 lead. The Pioneers tied it back up at 14 before the teams traded points down the stretch. Back to back kills by Macayla Thompson and Brook McCune sealed the win for Stout.

• Sidney Hoverman hit .439 with 20 kills, nine digs, two aces and two blocks
• Brook McCune hit .300 with 11 kills. 
• Kennedy Barrett had 36 assists and 18 digs
• Terrah Moshier 14 digs

 
Inside the Box Score Game 1

• Stout hit .261 as a team and totaled 63 digs, while Grinnell hit .160 and had 60 digs.
• Both teams had nine service aces. 
• Stout had seven blocks.

Score: UW-Stout 3 – Monmouth College 0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-20)
Record: Blue Devils (4-0), Scots (1-3)
Location: Darby Gymnasium 

Stout jumped out to a 6-1 lead and increased it to 14-5 to go on to win the first set 25-18. The second set started closer but the Blue Devils out raced the Scots to the finish line with a 13-6 run to take set two 25-18. The third set was tied at 13 before four straight points gave the Blue Devils the 17-13 advantage. The edge was all Stout needed as the held on to take the match 25-20.

Top Performers Game 2

• Sidney Hoverman hit .500 with a team-high18 kills and added 12 digs.
• Brooke McCune  and Lydia Kneubuehl each had seven kills
• Terrah Moshier had 12 digs, four assists and three aces. 
• Kennedy Barrett had 36 assists, 10 digs and four aces 

 
Inside the Box Score Game 2

• Stout hit .269 as a team and totaled 47 digs, while Monmouth hit .211 had 40 digs.
• Stout had three players record double digit digs.

The Blue Devils will travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to compete in the WLC quadrangular next weekend. Stout wil face Benedictine on Friday Sept. 8 at 6 p.m, and University of Dubuque on Saturday Sept 9 at 10 a.m. and Wisconsin Lutheran at 12 p.m.
