Blue Devils Fall to Eau Claire in Overtime

EAU CLAIRE - UW-Stout fell in overtime to rival UW-Eau Claire 4-3 Saturday night at Hobbs Ice Arena. 

The Blue Devils (4-5-1, 2-3-0) scored two goals in the third to force overtime, but No. 9 W-Eau Claire (8-2-1, 4-1-0) scored on the first short of overtime to spoil Stout's comeback. 

Stout trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes after giving up a goal 92 seconds into the game. They were down 2-0 late in the second, when Caleb Serre scored his first of the year on a shorthanded breakaway to put the Blue Devils within one. Serre was able to draw a penalty on the breakaway to cancel the Blugold power play. 

UWEC regained the two goal advantage just 68 seconds into the third. 1:42 later Payton Hart buried a feed from Dylan Rallis to bring Stout back with one. With just over seven minutes left in regulation, Bendan Boyce raced down the left side and lasered home his first career goal to tie up the game at 3 apiece. 

Stout won the opening draw in overtime but wasn't able to get a shot on net, UWEC gained possession of the puck and fired home the game winner from below the right circle to earn the extra point. 

With the overtime loss, Stout earns a points now has seven points in the WIAC standings.

Dawson Green made 34 saves for the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils will travel to River Falls on Friday Dec. 8 to face the Falcons. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
