Yellowjackets win on the road against the Blue Devils

MENOMONIE (November 18, 2023) - The first matchup between the Yellowjackets and the Blue Devils ended in a 4-1 win for Superior. 

In the first period, UW-Stout (3-3-1, 1-2-0 WIAC) went on their first power play of the game at 9:13. But UW-Superior (2-5-0, 1-1-0 WIAC) killed off the penalty. Only 35 seconds after the Blue Devil power play, The Yellowjackets got on the board first on a knuckling puck that beat Masternak. Dusty Bergstrom for Superior scored the goal with assists from Tyler Ryder and Jordan Guiney. 

At 12:08 of the period, both teams took a penalty and the game saw its first four on four hockey. During the four on four play, Stout took another penalty at 13:04 to make it a four on three power play for Superior. 16 seconds later at 13:20, Superior scored its second goal to make the game 2-0. The goal was scored by C.J. Walker with assists from Gavin Rasmussen and Guiney. 

As time was winding down in the period, at 18:33 both teams took a penalty and the game went to four on four hockey. During the four on four hockey, Superior took another penalty and the Blue Devils went on a four on three power play for eight seconds going into the first intermission. 

In the first period, shots were in favor of the Yellowjackets, 11-7. 

To start the second period, Stout was on a four on three power play for 34 seconds and then headed on a five on four power play for 1:18. But the Yellowjackets killed off the penalty. 

During the first three minutes of the second period, Stout had six shots on net, but did not get on the scoreboard. 

Superior went on a power play at 7:27 of the period, but Stout held their ground and the game remained 2-0. 

At 9:58 of the period, both teams skated four on four. During the four on four play, Superior scored to make the game 3-0. Gavin Rasmussen scored with assists with Reed Stark and Dylan Mactavish. 

At 14:56 of the second period, Stout got on the board when Kobe Keller beat Boschert to get within two goals. Gunner Moore and Noe Perez both assisted on the goal and the game was now 3-1 in favor of the Yellowjackets. 

The game saw its fourth four on four hockey at 16:27 of the period. With only one second left on the four on four hockey, Stout took a penalty and Superior went on a power play for 1:32 going into the second intermission. 

Shots after two periods were in favor of the Yellowjackets 23-22. 

Superior was on a power play to start the third period for 28 seconds. The penalty was killed, but shortly after at :49 into the period, the Yellowjackets scored to make the game 4-1. Justin Dauphinais scored with assists from Blake Holmes and Guiney. 

At 4:03 in the third period, Stout went on a power play. During the power play, Superior took another penalty and the game was five on three. The Blue Devils tried to climb their way back, but both penalties were killed off. 

Stout had one more chance on the power play at 7:27, but the Yellowjackets killed off the penalty. 

With four minutes left to play in the game, the Blue Devils took Masternak out of the goal to skate six on five. But no goals were accounted for and the game ended with Superior winning 4-1. 

Blue Devil's Tyler Masternak stopped 24 Yellowjacket shots. Superior's Jack Boschert received the win while stopping 33 shots. 

Up next for the Blue Devils is a non-conference matchup between the Gusties of Gustavus Adolphus College on Tuesday, November 21. The puck drop will be at 7:00 p.m. in St. Peter, Minnesota.
