MENOMONIE (November 17, 2023) - In the first 2023-24 matchup between the Pointers and the Blue Devils, Stevens Point scored four goals in the third period to take the first game of the three game series.
In the first period, UW-Stout (3-2-1, 1-1-0 WIAC) got on the board first on their third shot.
Jake McAlpine found the back of the net at 5:47 into the game. The goal was assisted by
Nicolas Pigeon to make the Blue Devils up one early into the game.
After the Stout goal, UW-Stevens Point (5-2-0, 2-0-0 WIAC) went on their first power play, but the Stout defense took care of the penalty kill and the game remained 1-0.
The Blue Devils went on their own power play at 10:06 of the period and just 18 seconds into the power play, scored to make the game 2-0.
Kobe Keller scored with assists from
Jacob Halvorson and
Sam Kroon.
But the Pointers wouldn't back down. Just 14 seconds after Stout's second goal, Stevens Point's Noah Finstrom scored with assists from Quinton Hill and Brett Humberstone.
At 11:57 of the first period, Stout would have a chance to get back up two goals, as they went on their second power play. Stevens Point secured the penalty kill and the game remained 2-1 in favor of the Blue Devils.
At the end of one period, shots were in favor of the Blue Devils 15-8.
In the second period, the Blue Devils took another two goal lead at 4:13 of the second period when
Boyd Stahlbaum shot the puck past the Pointer's Proctor making it Stahlbaum's fifth goal of the year.
Maksis Brimanis and
Kullan Daikawa assisted on the goal to make the game 3-1.
Just under a minute after the goal, Stevens Point went on a power play, but Stout killed off the penalty to skate full strength.
At 9:04 of the period, the Pointers went on another power play. During the man advantage, Stout took another penalty and skated five on three for 16 seconds. After the first penalty was killed off, Stevens Point scored to make the game 3-2. Tyler German scored the power play goal with assists from Dawson Sciarrino and Owen Dean at 12:18.
Just under a minute after the Pointer goal, the Blue Devils scored to take the two goal lead again. The goal was scored by
Kullan Daikawa with assists from
Noe Perez and Pigeon.
At 13:28 of the second period, Stevens Point went on their fourth power play of the period. At 14:36, Stevens Point scored when Fletcher Anderson beat Green to get within one. The assists came from Andrew Poulias and Sciarrino to make the game 4-3.
At 16:54 of the period, Stout went on their first power play of the period, but the Pointers maintained their momentum and killed off the penalty.
After two periods, Stout led in shots 24-21.
In the third period, Stevens Point tied up the game at 2:59. The goal was a power play goal scored by Noah Finstrom with assists from Fletcher Anderson and Andrew Poulias.
At 3:58 of the period, Stahlbaum went on a breakaway but was stoned by Proctor. After the save, a Proctor injury brought in Ryan Maguire for the Pointers.
At 4:28, Stevens Point went on another power play, but this time, Stout's
Kobe Keller got a breakaway opportunity and got it past Maguire for the short-handed goal to make the game 5-4. The goal was unassisted at 4:35 of the period. The penalty was eventually killed off by the Blue Devils.
At 13:32 of the third period, Stevens Point tied it up at five when Nicholas Aromatario scored his first goal of the season with assists from Dawson Sciarrino and Finstrom.
Just under a minute later at 14:23 of the period, Pointer's Andrew Poulias scored to have Stevens Point lead for the first time in the game at 6-5.
The Blue Devils went on a power play at 17:58 and eventually skated six on four by taking out Green. During the six on four, Stevens Point's David Hill scored an empty net goal to make it a two goal lead for the Pointers.
But Stout didn't back down as
Peyton Hart scored on the six on four power play at 19:26 of the third period to make the game 7-6. With just 34 seconds left in the game, the Blue Devils had chances to score, but eventually came up short.
In net for the Blue Devils was
Dawson Green stopping 28 Pointer shots. Stevens Point's Ryan Maguire got his first win of the season stopping six shots. Alex Proctor started in net and stopped 23 Blue Devil shots.
