Falcons beat Blue Devils in a shootout

MENOMONIE (January 3, 2023) - The Blue Devils hadn't played a game since December 10, 2022 after being off for Holiday Break. UW-Stout (9-4-1, 3-3-1) faced off against UW-River Falls (4-8-1, 1-5-1 WIAC) at the Fanetti Community Center and the game would end in a tie. But per WIAC rules, the game went into a three man shootout. River Falls scored twice in the shootout to give the Falcons an extra point in the WIAC standings. 

In the first period, the Falcons went on a power play at 5:54 of the game, but Stout killed off the penalty. River Falls went on another power play at 18:38 of the period. The Blue Devils started with a man down to start the second period. 

After one period, Stout outshot the Falcons 9-4. 

During the Falcon's power play from the first period, Stout killed off the penalty. After the penalty kill, Stout's Dylan Rallis beat Buchholz to give the Blue Devils the 1-0 lead. Trenten Heyde assisted on the goal. 

After the Blue Devil goal, Stout went on the penalty kill at 2:02 of the period. During the power play, the Falcon's Arsenii Smekhnov scored a power play goal to tie the game. Connor McGrath and Alex Davis assisted on the goal. 

Stout went on their first power play at 5:42, but River Falls killed off the penalty to skate five on five. At 9:45 of the period, River Falls went on their fourth power play, but this time the Blue Devils killed off the penalty. 

At 12:11 of the period, Falcon's Mike Gelatt beat Masternak to take the lead. Noah Roofe and Matt Clark assisted on the goal to make the game 2-1. 

Stout had power play chances at 13:29 and 16:37 of the period, but the Falcon's killed off both penalties to keep the lead. 

At the end of the second period at 19:56, Stout took another penalty and started the third period a man down. 

In the third period, Stout killed off the penalty to skate even strength. At 6:10 of the period, Stout went on their own power play and capitalized. At 7:40 of the period, Stout's Gunner Moore beat the Falcon's goalie to tie the game. Trenten Heyde assisted on the game tying goal and the game saw 2-2. 

With just under three minutes left in the game, Stout had a chance to go ahead when a goal was waved off. At the end of three periods, the game would go in a five minute sudden death overtime. 

During the overtime, both teams had chances to score the game winning goal, but no goals were accounted for. The game would end in a tie, but would also go in a three man shootout to secure one extra point. 

In the shootout, Stout went first, but didn't score. River Falls scored their next two goals to secure the extra point in the WIAC standings. 

Stout's Tyler Masternak finished the game with 16 saves. Falcon's Dean Buchholz finished the game with 29 saves. 

Up next for the Blue Devils is a non-conference home matchup between Bethel University on Friday, January 6 with a puck drop at 7:00 p.m.
