Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stout Soccer defeats St. Norbert, 3-1, for first win of season

Stout 3, St. Norbert 1

MENOMONIE (September 8, 2022) - Strong defense and calculated attacks earn Stout Soccer (1-2-1) their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over St. Norbert (0-2-0) on Thursday night. Liv Winkler, Caylee Boone, and Marissa Steele recorded Stout's three goals.

Off a corner kick Marissa Steele found Liv Winkler in the box at the 10 minute mark to put Stout up by one to open up the game. The goal broke a nearly 275 minutes scoring drought going back to the season opener.

St. Norbert had some good looks on goal, but Julia McNamar made some nice saves against the Green Knight's attack. St. Norbert got on the board to knot the game at 1 apiece after Amelia Carlson found Mallory Names on a break at the 39 minute mark.

The second half was a bit of a slow start as both teams looked to go on the attack, but weren't able to find many looks at goal. Both teams had seven first half shots, but the Green Knights only had three second half shots. Stout had some more looks, getting seven shots on goal in the second half.

Boone broke the tie at the 70 minute mark, finding the back of the net from the front of goalie box. That was Boone's second goal of the season, scoring Stout's last goal against Hamline back on Sept 1. Just six minutes later, Stout extended their lead with a Marissa Steele goal, her first of the season. Some strong defense for the remainder of the game gave Stout their first win of the season.

McNamar finished the game with four saves, only allowing a single goal. The Green Knight's goalie, Lilly Collins, recorded four saves. Abby Thompson had five shots, two on goal for St. Norbert. On the Stout side, Rachel Younker had four shots, two on goal. Steele scored three points, with one goal and one assist.

Stout lost the possession game, 49-percent to 51-percent. But 25-percent of the Blue Devil's time was spent in the attacking zone. In comparison, the Green Knight's only spent about 12-percent of their time in the attacking zone.

The Blue Devils head out on the road this weekend, traveling to Moorhead on Sept. 10 to take on the Cobbers of Concordia-Moorhead for a Saturday match-up at 3:30 p.m. Stout has some time off before returning home to play Viterbo on Friday, Sept. 16.
