Blue Devils bow out to Transylvania in second game in Texas invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (September 2, 2022) - UW-Stout hung tough with 24th-ranked Transylvania University for the first set, but the 2021 NCAA qualifying Pioneers put the Blue Devils on hold in the second and third sets for a 3-0 decision in Stout's second match at the Trinity University Invitational Friday.

The Pioneers (1-1) won the match 25-23, 25-13, 25-15. 

Senior Caroline Braun (Prescott) led the Blue Devils with seven kills. Sidney Hoverman (Jr, St. Croix Falls) and Alyssa Ihde (Jr, Rochester, Minn) each had five kills. Jessica Barr (Sr, Bloomer) had a solo block and two block assists. 

In the first set, Stout (0-2) held a four-to-five point lead through much of the first portion of the game. Stout held a 14-9 lead when the Pioneers started to move forward, and tied the game at 15-15. Transy jumped out to a two-point lead and Stout tied the score at 20 apiece on a kill by Braun and by setter Kennedy Barrett (So, Duluth, Minn). Stout grabbed the 22-20 lead on two attack errors by the Pioneers and went on to outscore Stout, 3-1 to take the set, 25-23. 

Transylvania grabbed a fast lead in the second set and continued the pace. The teams tied at 9-9, before Transylvania went on a 16-6 run to close out the night.

Stout will close out the tournament Saturday, Sept. 3 when they meet sixth-ranked Berry College at 12:15 p.m. and Edgewood College at 4:45 p.m.
