WHITEWATER (May 1, 2022) -Â UW-Stout's
Charlie Szykowny hit his 14th home run of the season, one short of tying the school single season record, but the Blue Devils were swept by No. 9 UW-Whitewater, 7-1, 8-3, Sunday in Whitewater.
In the opening game, the Blue Devils (15-17, 10-12 WIAC) took the lead in the third inning when lead off hitter
Colin Hageman drew a walk, moved to second on
Charlie Szykowny's groundout and scored on
Joel Thimsen's double to left center field.
The ninth-ranked Warhawks (27-6, 19-3 WIAC) got the run back, and then some, in the fourth inning, stacking up three runs on three hits, keyed by a two-run double by designated hitter Sam Paden. Whitewater added a run in the fifth, then put up another three-run inning, accomplishing the feat in the seventh inning.Â
Jace Baumann went seven innings, striking out three, but giving up six walks and seven runs, six earned.
Brock Burg pitched the eighth inning, facing only three batters. Burg gave up a hit, but picked off the runner.
The Blue Devils finished with four hits to Whitewater's 13. Thimsen, Hageman and
Drew Ries each had a double.
Jacoby Endreas had Stout's other hit. Three Warhawk pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts. The Warhawks' Zach Campbell was 3 for 4. Paden finished with three RBI.Â
In game two, Szykowny hit a lead-off solo shot in the sixth inning to pull Stout to within 7-3. The left-handed batting Szykowny hit the home run down the right field line. Szykowny needs one more home run to tie Brad O'Connell (2000) and Ryan Freitag (2014).Â
Whitewater after a scoreless first inning, Whitewater scored on a two-run home run by Campbell, the stretched the lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning on a passed ball.Â
Stout pulled to within one run with a two-run fifth inning.
Jack Schirpke led off the inning with a right field inning, then moved on Endreas' single the other way. The pair moved up on a passed ball.
Paul Weise plated Schirpke with a ground out to first. Endreas would score on a wild pitch. The Warhawks added four bottom of the inning for a 7-2 lead. Szykowny's home run made it a four-run game and the Warhawks added a run in the eighth.Â
The Warhawks had 10 hits to Stout's seven.
Riley Boushack had two doubles and was 2 for 3 in the game and Endreas was 3 for 4 in the game with a double and was 4 for seven on the day. The Warhawks had three batters with two hits apiece.
The teams will close out the four-game series, Monday, May 2, with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
