WHITEWATER (May 2, 2022) - For the second consecutive day, UW-Whitewater used some big innings early in the games to put UW-Stout behind the eight-ball and the Warhawks went on to take both games, 14-2, 12-4, to conclude the four game series Monday.
In the opener, the Warhawks (29-6, 21-3 WIAC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first and extended it to 11-0 with a five run second inning. Whitewater collected seven of their 12 total hits in the first two innings of the game. Whitewater added another run in the fourth inning before the Blue Devils got on the board.
Stout (15-19, 10-14 WIAC) scored two runs in the sixth inning.
Levi Wilson opened with a single up the middle and
Colin Hageman reached on an error. Following an out,
Joel Thimsen singled up the middel to bring home Wilson. Hageman and Wilson moved up a base on a wild pitch and
Jacoby Endreas grounded out to score Hageman. The Warhawks added two more runs in the sixth.
Stout recorded five hits to 12 for Whitewater. The Blue Devils got hits from Wilson,
Charlie Szykowny, Thimsen,
Drew Ries and
Reese Vold. Zach Campbell was 4 for 4 for the Warhawks with a home run. Matt Scolan scored two home runs and finished with six RBI.
In the second game, the Warhawks put up four runs in the first inning and added five runs in the fourth inning.
In the third inning, Stout cut the lead to 4-1 when
Reese Vold recorded a one-out infield, moved to second on a Thimsen single to center and came home on
Charlie Szykowny's RBI double to right center. Stout cut the lead in half with another run in the fourth when catcher
Paul Weise sliced an RBI single to right center, scoring Drew Reis, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.
The Warhawks jumped out to a 9-2 lead with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Stout picked up two runs in the fifth inning. Thimsen hit a lead-off single to first base, moved to second on Szykowny's single, got to third on
Jacoby Endreas' single and came home on Ries' sacrifice fly. Moments later,
Levi Wilson drove in Szykowny with a single to right field.
Whitewater added two more runs in the eighth inning.
Stout pounded out 11 hits to 14 for the Warhawks.
Vold, Thimsen, Szykowny, Endreas and Wilson each had two hits in the game. Vold started both games in right field and finished the day going 3 for 6. Jacob DeMeyer and Dylan Rost each finished three hits apiece. DeMeyer finished with five RBI.
The Blue Devils are scheduled to host Ripon College, Wednesday, May 4, in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Nelson Field. Stout will close out the regular season when they host Finlandia University Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7. May 6 is Senior Day and May 7 will be played at Wakanda Park in North Menomonie.
