OSHKOSH (April 9, 2022) - UW-Stout (13-7, 8-2) saw their eight game winning streak in WIAC play come to an end on Saturday, losing 11-2 and 13-4 at UW-Oshkosh (9-9, 4-2).
In game one of the afternoon, the Blue Devils grabbed the lead first in the third inning on a
Colin Hageman triple to center field, scoring
Drew Ries.
Charlie Szykowny would add to the lead in the top of the sixth inning when he hit his league leading eight home run of the season. After five solid innings on the mound, starting pitcher
Jace Baumann (1-2) ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning when he surrended five runs, four of them coming on a Titan grand slam.
The Titans would add a solo home run in the seventh inning and a three-run home run in the eigth inning, ultimately losing their first WIAC contest of the season, 11-2.
The Blue Devils were held to six hits and one walk in the first game of the afternoon, leaving a total of four runners on base.
The Blue Devils jumped out to the lead again in the second game of the afternoon. In the top of the third inning, Hageman picked up his first home run of the season, a solo shot, giving the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead. The Titans would answer right back in the bottom half of the inning, evening the score at one.
Riley Boushack gave the Blue Devils the lead again in the top half of the fourth inning, when he doubled in
Jack Schirpke. For the second inning in a row, the Blue Devils surrendered the lead, giving up three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Szykowny would cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth inning on a hard hit ball to third base, scoring
Justin Schnell. Down 4-3 going into the sixth inning,
Drew Ries would tie the game for the Blue Devils on a shot over the left field fence for his first home run of the season.
After the Blue Devils tied the game, it was all Titans, scoring nine unanswered runs to take a 13-4 win.
Drew Buss (1-2) took the loss, surrendering six runs on eight hits over five innings.
Quintin Gonzalez,
Trevor Miller and
Tim Kohls combined to pitch the final three innings, allowing six runs on six hits.
On the day, Szykowny saw his hitting streak extend to 19 games while reigning WIAC player of the week,
Joel Thimsen, saw his 20-game hitting streak come to an end.
The Blue Devils look to get back on track on Sunday when they face the Titans in another double header in Oshkosh. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
