Blue Devils battle to a split on Sunday at UW-Oshkosh

OSHKOSH (April 10, 2022) -  The UW-Stout Blue Devils (14-9, 9-3) salvaged their weekend against UW-Oshkosh (10-10, 5-5), picking up a win the in finale on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils dropped game one of Sunday 5-3, but bounced back late in the afternoon with a dominating 12-5 win over the Titans.

In the first game of the day, the Blue Devils fell behind early and could never recover. The Titans put up one run in the first and three runs in the fourth before the Blue Devils could cross the plate. The Blue Devils finally got on the board in the sixth inning on a Drew Ries sacrificie fly, scoring Joel Thimsen. Parker Hagebock would later add a run on a Titan error, scoring Jack Schirpke.

The Titans would add a run in the seventh inning to make it 5-2. Colin Hageman would add a run in the ninth inning on a ground out to second base, scoring Justin Schnell. The Blue Devil rally would fall short, losing the game 5-3.

Following up his complete game shutout from last weekend, Cody Urban (2-2) tossed six innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits, striking out three. Alex Foss and Luke Kallod pitched the final two innings, allowing a run on no hits.

The Blue Devils were able to bounce back in game two of the afternoon and end the weekend with a win, 12-5.

After giving up the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning, the Blue Devils would answer with two runs in the second and two runs in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Hagebock got the Blue Devils on the board in the second, singling in Thimsen and Colin Hageman. In the top of the third, Reis and Levin Wilson would drive in runs to increase the Blue Devil lead.

After the Titans scored a run in the bottom of the third, the Blue Devils added three more of their own in the top of the fourth. Schnell would make the score 5-2 on a Colin Hageman single. In the next at-bat, Charilie Szykowny blasted a ball to right field for his ninth home run of the season.

The Titans would again add runs in the bottom of the inning to make the score 7-4. Thimsen and Wilson would add runs in the top of the sixth inning on singles to left field, increasing the lead to 9-4. The Titans would add a run in the bottom of the sixth on a home run, but it would be all Blue Devils after that.

The Blue Devils would add two runs in the seventh and another run in the ninth on Titans errors. The Titans ended the afternoon with six errors.

Cooper Beving got the start for the Blue Devils, going an inning and two-thirds. Ethan Kjellberg (4-1) got the win in relief, going four and one-thirds innings allow four runs on nine hits, striking out five. Connor Hemme picked up a three inning save, allowing no hits and no runs over the final three frames.

The Blue Devils are back in action this weekend at home against the UW-Stevens Point Pointers. First pitch is Friday at 12 p.m..
