Softball Preview: Blue Devils to get conference season underway at Oshkosh and Whitewater

THIS WEEK'S GAMES: UW-Stout (10-10, 0-0 WIAC) has not played since splitting a pair of games at Bethany Lutheran College, March 26. Stout is scheduled to begin their conference schedule with a doubleheader at UW-Oshkosh (14-4, 0-0 WIAC) on Saturday, April 9 beginning at 2 p.m. and will be at UW-Whitewater (8-8, 1-1 WIAC), Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m. The Titans are ranked 15th in the April 5 NFCA Coaches Top 25 poll.

The Titans swept Marian University, Wednesday, April 6, in a non-conference doubleheader, winning both games in five innings, 10-2. The Warhawks opened WIAC play with a split at UW-Platteville, Wednesday, April 6, dropping the opener in six innings, 14-6, but charging back for a 13-1, five inning win.  Whitewater is scheduled to host UW-River Falls, Saturday, April 9, before hosting the Blue Devils the following day.

UW-STOUT: Stout sits right at .500 with a 10-10 record. The Blue Devils have already exceeded last year's wins total of six. The Blue Devils have shown much more of a penchant for power. Already this season, Stout has hit more home runs this year (eight to five all of last year) triples (seven to three) and is more than two-thirds in doubles (22 to 34 last year). Stout has plated more runs this year (95) compared to last year's total (89) and has already recorded 87 RBI compared to last year's 79. The Blue Devils are also stealing more bases, nabbing 39 compared to 27 last season. Korin Hall has one-third of Stout's stolen bases, taking 13 bases in 13 attempts this year. Hall's 13 stolen bases exceeds her total of nine stolen bases during her first three seasons. Pinch runner Hannah Timm has six stolen bases. Emma Muehlenbeck has five stolen bases with Marissa Boettcher, Alyssa Albrecht, and Katelyn Belleau each have three stolen bases. Eleven players have pilfered at least one stolen base so far this year. 
 
AT THE PLATE: Shortstop Shannon Jones and Emma Muehlenbeck have led the Blue Devils so far this season at the plate. Muehlenbeck is batting just over .300 with 16 hits (one triple) on 47 at-bats. Jones has recorded 17 hits (six doubles, two triples, one home run) on 51 at bats. Jones and Katelyn Belleau have each hit one homer so far this season. Lexy Kupczak has hit two and Kate Funk leads the Blue Devils with three home runs and 14 RBIs. | Statistics

IN THE CIRCLE: Madee Kleinschmidt, Mackensie Wolterstorff and Anna Blanford have been getting the majority of the starts, with Madalyn Lambert and Jordan Caby seeing time in the circle. Lambert has picked up one win and has 10 strikeouts in her 12.1 innings pitched. Caby has six strikeouts in her 4.0 innings pitched. Kleinschmidt (2-5) has been consistent from the circle, with an ERA of 4.13. Blanford (4-1) boasts a high ERA of 1.18 allowing only 11 runs in nearly 35.2 innings pitched. Wolterstroff (3-3) leads the Blue Devils in strikeouts with 45 (alread higher than last year 24 strikeouts) in 37.1 innings pitched. The Blue Devils already have 94 strikeouts at the halfway point of the season, beating last year's number of 90.

BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT:  Shannon Jones was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle as the senior shortstop led UW-Stout's attack in a 15-3, five inning first game win over host Bethany Lutheran College Saturday at the MSU Dome. WIAC PRESEASON POLL: UW-Stout was picked to finish eighth in the 2022 WIAC preseason poll by conference coaches and sports information directors. UW-Oshkosh was picked to win the regular season title, followed by UW-Whitewater, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Platteville, UW-River Falls and UW-Stout.  | WIAC Preseason Poll


SCOUTING UW-OSHKOSH:  UW-Oshkosh is led by Brianna Davis, who is posting a batting average of .512 (21-41) with five doubles and three triples. Hannah Ritter is posting a .500 batting average (27 hits, 54 at-bats). Ritter, an All-WIAC selection last year, has six doubles and has 14 RBI. Freshman Abby Garceau is hitting .468  (22-47). Graceau has hit three doubles on the season. Grace Stevens, Morgan Rau (10-32) and Zoe Malone (7-23) are all hitting above .300, with Stevens at .326 (15-46), Rau at .313 (10-32) and Malone at .304 (7-23). Sophie Wery and Sydney Rau have each crashed a home run this season. Wery leads the team in RBI with 16, hitting two doubles, two triples and the home run. UW-OSHKOSH LAST TIME OUT:  Oshkosh collected 25 hits, including 10 for extra bases, on the way to earning a pair of 10-2, five-inning victories over Marian University on Wednesday at UW-Oshkosh Rec Plex Field. Oshkosh pounded out nine doubles and a home run to defeat Marian University for the 16th time in the past 17 meetings. Eight different Titans drove in runs Wednesday as Abby Garceau, Brianna Davis, Hannah Ritter and Sophie Wery each had a team-leading three runs batted in. Grace Stevens, Sydney Rau and Ana Iliopoulos all had two RBIs for UW-Oshkosh while Emily Cliver drove in one. Iliopoulos, Ritter and Zoe Malone scored three runs apiece during the nonconference doubleheader against the Sabres. Stevens blasted a two-run homer – her first this season and second career – in the nightcap.  |  Game Story and Stats  |  Maddie Fink pitched a one-hit shutout in the opener and the offense produced 23 hits on the day as the nationally ranked UW-Oshkosh softball team swept a home nonconference doubleheader against Ripon College on Tuesday (April 5). UW-Oshkosh is ranked 15th in the NCAA Division III by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), downed Ripon College by scores of 11-0 behind Fink's gem in the pitcher's circle and 10-2 during the nightcap. LAST TIME THEY MET:  UW-Stout had top-seeded UW-Oshkosh down for the count, but the Titans got up and came back to end Stout's season with a 4-3, 10-inning decision in the first round of the WIAC Softball Championship, May 11, 2021, at the UW-Oshkosh Softball Park. The Titans' Natalie Dudek lifted a sacrifice fly to center field with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to score the decisive run. The Blue Devils ran out to a 3-0 lead before the Titans began their comeback and Sommer Kunstmann was strong in the circle, going 9.2 innings, the longest outing in her collegiate career. Kunstmann scattered three hits over the first five innings, keeping zeroes on the Oshkosh side of the scoreboard as Stout built a 3-0 lead.  |  Game Story and Stats


SCOUTING UW-WHITEWATER: The Warhawks are lead at the plate by Krista Sbarra who has 20 hits on 46 at-bats. Sbarra has hit two doubles this season. Delaney Becker (.316) follows her with 12 hits on 38 at-bats with three doubles. Brooke Mangler and Kendall Klatt have each hit two home runs and Kiarra Kostrowski (15-49, .306) has hit one home run, two doubles and two triples. Mallory Hollatz (5.85 ERA, 32.1 IP, 19K) has had the most starts for Whitewater with eight. UW-WHITEWATER LAST TIME OUT: Whitewater took advantage of strong pitching and early run support Wednesday for a 13-1 victory at UW-Platteville in five innings in the second game of a conference doubleheader. The Warhawks dropped the opener by a 14-6 score in six innings. Both of Wednesday's games ended by run rule.  In the second game, Whitewater plated four runs in the second inning, four more in the fourth and five in the fifth behind 14 hits in the contest. Kate Cleveland improved to 3-0 for the season, allowing one unearned run on three hits over her five innings of work. Centerfielder Kiarra Kostroski posted three hits, one run scored and four runs batted in to lead UW-W, which totaled five doubles in the game. LAST TIME THEY MET: Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth with two outs, freshman Katelyn Belleau ripped a bases loaded triple to right field to put UW-Stout ahead of UW-Whitewater, 4-3, but the Warhawks scored two runs in the top of the seventh to defeat the Blue Devils, 5-4, April 17, 2021, at Alumni Field. Whitewater, which had won the first game 9-0 in six innings, scored two runs in the second inning on a Kayleigh O'Brien two-run home run and stretched the lead to 3-0 with a solo run in the fifth inning.  |  Game Story and Statistics

AWARDS AND HONORS: 2021: Ashley Jacobson was selected as The Heights/UW-Stout Athlete of the Week after helping the. Blue Devils to an 11-8 win over UW-Eau Claire, April 22...Korin Hall was named the WIAC position player of the week and Mackensie Wolterstorff the WIAC pitcher of the week after a season-opening sweep of UW-Superior, Feb. 27...2020: Korin Hall was named the WIAC position player of the week after the Blue Devils' only games of the 2020 season.


COACH CHRIS ILIOPOULOS: Blue Devil coach Chris Iliopoulos (10-10) is in his first year as the head coach of the Blue Devils with the 2022 season. Iliopoulos was the Blue Devils' assistant coach for four seasons before assuming the head role last summer. 

NFCA RANKINGS: UW-Oshkosh is the only WIAC team currently ranked in the April 5 NFCA poll, holding down the 15th spot. Stout has played nationally ranked Millikin University an is scheduled to play 23rd ranked St. Benedict last thirs month.  |  NFCA Top 25 poll

LAST SEASON: The Blue Devils finished the 2021 season at 6-26 and 0-14 in the WIAC, but took UW-Oshkosh into extra innings before bowing out 4-3 in 10 innings to the top seeded team in the conference in the first round of the WIAC playoffs. 

ON DECK: The Blue Devils are scheduled to finally host a home game when they host Luther College, Wednesday, April 13 at 3 p.m. at Alumni Field in a non-conference contest. The Blue Devils will travel to UW-Stevens Point, Friday, April 15, for a 1 p.m. contest.
