CLERMONT, FL (March 15, 2022) - UW-Stout defeated both of their opponents on the third day of their Spring Break trip, defeating Lasell University and Macalester College. Stout shot out to an early lead against Lasell and was able to stop their comeback to get the 6-5 win. Stout capitalized on their hot bats against Macalester, defeating the Scots, 7-1.
Batting second,
Maggie O'Brien hit a double to bat in
Korin Hall to get the Blue Devils on the board. O'Brien made it to third off a wild pitch and
Ashley Jacobson got walked to first. With two runners on base,
Kate Funk stepped up to the plate and hit her second homer of the year. Funk was immediately followed by
Lexy Kupczak, who hit her own homer.
The Blue Devils came out of the first inning leading 5-0. Lasell was able to score a run in the bottom of the second and third, but the Blue Devils answered back with their own run in the top of the third. After three innings, the score was in favor of the Blue Devils 6-2. Lasell looked to make a comeback in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs and closing the Blue Devil lead to just one.
With the game on the line, the Blue Devils' defense tightened up and didn't allow Lasell to complete their comeback.
Mackensie Wolterstorff finished out the last three innings with five strikeouts and only allowing two hits, securing the 6-5 Blue Devil win.
The Blue Devils continued to showcase their hot hitting with another quick led against Macalester in the next game. Macalester would earn their lone run in the top of the first. Stout answered back with another huge first inning. After starting out the bottom of the first with two walks,
Shannon Jones hit a double to bat in both
Korin Hall and
Alyssa Albrecht. Later the same inning, a
Grace Vowell double followed by a double from pitcher
Anna Blanford gave Stout another run, extending Stout's lead to 4-1 after the first inning.
Stout would extend the lead in the second inning, this time Albrecht was the one to earn an RBI, and then would find herself reaching home with help from another RBI from Funk. After just two innings of play, Stout lead 6-1. The Blue Devils would put the game away for good when Jacobson batted in Funk in the fifth.
Blanford went the distance for the Blue Devils, scattering six hits and allowing the one run, striking out one and walking one. Blanford was 2 for 3 at the plate.
Stout will get a day of rest in Florida before they take on Franklin and Marshall College and then Springfield College on Thursday, March 17. The first game is set to start at 9:15 a.m. (ET).
