FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 14 2022)- UW-Stout got off to two strong starts on Monday morning but could not build off the starts, dropping back-to-back games to Eastern Connecticut State University and Skidmore College.
The Blue Devils were able to jump on the board first on a
Joel Thimsen first inning double, scoring
Colin Hageman. ECSU would answer with three runs of their own in the top of the third inning. The Blue Devils would answer right back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a
Charlie Szykowny single to center.
ECSU would go on to score 17 runs before the Blue Devils added their third run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on a Szykowny single to right field, scoring
Reese Vold.
The Blue Devils could not manage to create any more offense and would fall 20-3.
Jace Baumann took the loss in the game, going four and third innings allowing six runs on six hits. Hageman and Szykowny both finished the morning with two hits and Thimsen picked up his sixth RBI on the young season.
The Blue Devils wasted no time and were right back in action against Skidmore College, immediately following the ECSU game.
For the second game in the a row, the Blue Devils got on the board first in the second inning.
Nolan Harke singled in
Levi Wilson to give the Blue Devils the early lead. Skidmore would answer right back in the bottom half of the inning to even the score 1-1.
In the top of the fourth inning,
Justin Schnell gave the Blue Devils a 3-1 lead on an RBI single to center field.
Parker Hagebock and Harke would score on the play.
Skidmore again would answer right back with four runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to take a 5-3 lead. In the top half of the fifth, Thimsen singled in Szykowny to cut the lead to 5-4. Skidmore would answer with 3 more of their own, making the score 8-4.
The score would be 13-6 entering the ninth inning when the Blue Devils made a strong push to tie the game. With the bases loaded and no one out, Hagebock flew out to center to score Thimsen to make the game 13-7. After a walk to
Connor Hemme, Hageman singled to center scoring Harke and Wilson. With two outs and runners on first and second, Szykowny hit a rop to right field for his first home run of the season, cutting the lead to 13-12, but that is how the game would end as
Justin Sedin could not keep the rally going in the next at bat.
Cody Urban took the loss, going five and two-thirds innings allowing eight runs on 13 hits.
Dak Doyle and
Quintin Gonzalez also made apperances out of the bullpen.
After five games, Thimsen leads the Blue Devils with nine RBI and. .471 batting average, while Szykowny leads the team with ten hits and 17 total bases.
The Blue Devils will be back in action Wednesday morning when they face Saint Michael's College in their fourth of eight games in Fort Myers, FL.
