Stout strikes first, but Pointers charge back in second, third periods

STEVENS POINT (February 4, 2022) - UW-Stout bolted out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, but 11th-ranked UW-Stevens Point charged back with four second period goals and a clincher in the third period to down the Blue Devils, 5-2, Friday at KB Willett Arena.

Stout (7-14-0, 5-7-0 WIAC) jumped out with a goal by Alex Nagel at 12:50 of the first period, with assists by Cole Beckstead and Alex Stuckert. Beckstead doubled the Blue Devils' score when he scored at 18:40, with assists by Nagel and Caleb Serre and Stout went into the locker room with 2-0 lead.

But on the strength of a hat trick in the second period by the Pointers' Jordan Fader, Stevens Point (14-5-1, 9-2-0 WIAC) took over the game. Fader opened the second period when he scored at 1:41, then took advantage on the power play at 4:40 to knot the score. Carter Roo added a goal just over a minute later to make it 3-2 and Fader doubled up Stout's goal totals at 13:37. The Pointers' Brett Humberstone chipped in a power play goal at 16:09 of the third to ice the game.

Zach Cloutier took the loss after making a season-high 44 saves. The Pointers' Ryan Wagner made 22 saves.

The teams will meet again Saturday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in Stevens Point.
