Box Score MENOMONIE (February 12, 2022) - The Yellow Jackets cashed in on two goals in the first period and second period to down UW-Stout (8-17-0, 6-9-0 WIAC). The Blue Devils out shot the Yellow Jackets, but fell 5-2 in the game.
It didn't take long for UW-Superior (13-10-2, 7-8 WIAC) to cash in on a goal. Only 2:38 minutes into the game, the Yellow Jacket's Troy Mactavish scored the first goal of the game. Assists came from Martan Yelle and Chad Lopez.
Superior went on their first power play at 5:05 of the period, but Stout's penalty kill killed off the penalty. The Yellow Jacket's went on another power play at 8:24 and this time, Superior's Chad Lopez found the back of the net to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead.
Stout didn't back down as the Blue Devils went on a power play at 11:08 of the first period. Stout's
Logan Nelson shot the puck by the goal line and got it past the Superior's goalie to cut the lead in half, 2-1. Assists on the power play goal were from
Cole Beckstead and
Matt Dahlseide.
At 6:17 of the period, both teams took a penalty and the game saw four on four, but no goals were scored. At the end of the period with 1:09 left, the game saw another four on four play.
At the end of the first period, shots were tied at 13-13.
Both teams skated four on four for the first 51 seconds of the second period. But no goals were accounted for.
At 3:12 in the period, Superior went on another power play. The Yellow Jacket's took advantage and scored when Zach Bannister found the back of the net on the poewr play goal. Assists on the goal were from Jordan Martin and Macgregor Sinclair.
At 4:46 of the second period both teams skated four on four and just nine seconds later, Stout took another penalty, which gave Superior a one man advantage. The game saw a rare four on three, but no goals were scored.
Superior had another power play opportunity at 7:00 of the period, but the Yellow Jackets took a penalty which brought us back to even strength hockey. Stout had 13 seconds on the power play, but Superior killed off the penalty.
With only 1:47 left in the period, Superior's Dylan Johnson scored to make the game 4-1. The goal was assisted by Coltyn Bates.
After two periods, shots were in favor of the Yellow Jackets 22-21 and led 4-1 in the game.
In the third period, Superior went on a power play at 1:44 of the period, but the Blue Devils killed the penalty to get back to full strength.
With only 5:26 left in the game, Stout's
Kobe Keller scored his first goal of the season to get within two goals. During the goal, a penalty was assessed to Superior and the Blue Devils found themselves on a power play. But the Yellow Jackets killed off the penalty and momentum.
Stout took out their goalie to gain an extra attacker with only 2:20 left in the game. The Blue Devils had scoring chances with an extra attacker, but couldn't get within one goal. Superior scored an empty net goal with 20 seconds left in the game. The goal was scored by Jordan Martin.
The Yellow Jacket's Landon Pavlisin stopped 30 Blue Devil shots and earning the win. Stout's
Brennan Kitchen had 22 saves on the game.
Up next for the Blue Devils will be participating in the WIAC Championships in the first round next Friday, February 18 and Saturday, February 19. Seedings will be determined after this weekends games.
