A LOOK AT THE 2021-22 BLUE DEVILS
- Stout cracked the century mark in scoring yet again, defeating UW-River Falls 100-83 on January 26. The Blue Devils are averaging 89.6 points and 17.9 assists per game. Both of these numbers are the best in the WIAC. These stats also earn a top spot on the national scale, Stout is seventh in scoring per game and 21st in assists per game.
- This high scoring offense is highlighted by five Blue Devils who are scoring double digits on the season, with one more not far behind the 10-point mark. Lovell Williams (19.3 ppg), Armani Tinsley (15.7), Jon Ciriacks (12.3), Brody Fox (11.2), with Luke Geieger (10.1) and Drew Scott (8.0) not far behind. Scott has been one of the most efficient scorers in the WIAC, making 71 percent of his shots (60 for 85). Fox also cracks the top 5 of the WIAC with 63-percent field goal efficiency (82 for 131).
- Lovell Williams has scored in double digits in 18 of the 19 games he has appeared in. Williams still scored six points in only five minutes during the one game. Williams cracked his career-high scoring with 31 points against Buena Vista University. Williams was on a five-game streak where he was scoring over 20 points a game, but the streak came to an end as he was one point shy against UW-Eau Claire, finishing with 19 points. Williams did record 10 assists against the Blugolds, his third double-digit assist game of the season. Williams is averaging 5.8 assists per game, the best in the WIAC.
- Armani Tinsley has continued to find the basket this season, breaking double-digits in the past 11 games, recording a career-high 31 points in the win against Eau Claire. Tinsley also has recorded 51 assists on the season, placing him eigtht in the WIAC with 2.8 assists per game.
- The 2021-22 Blue Devils broke Stout's single game scoring record which had been held since 1971 (the 1986 team tied the record). Stout defeated the visiting Greenville Panthers, a team known for their high-scoring games, 125-119. Brody Fox connected on two late game free throws to put this Blue Devil team into the record books. The next time out, the Blue Devils scored 108 points in a win over Finlandia.
- The Blue Devils experienced their first overtime game of the season in their first meeting against UW-Eau Claire. The last time Stout had an overtime game was in the 2018-19 season where Stout lost to McMurry University, 79-75. But this past matchup needed two overtimes to decide a winner. The last time the Blue Devils went into double overtime was in the 1999-2000 season where they lost to Stevens Point, 89-84.

CLIMBING THE LADDER
- Both Jon Ciriacks and Luke Geiger are making their way up the UW-Stout all-time scoring list. Ciriacks is currently 24th on the list, with 1027 points, while Geiger is 28th with 967 career points. Ciriacks is currently tied for 10th on the 3-point made list with 137 and Geiger is right behind with 126 treys, ranking 11th. Ciriacks is 20th on the all-time rebounds list with 477.
BLUE DEVILS LAST TIME OUT
- For the first time since the 2001-02 season, the Blue Devils recorded a season sweep over UW-Stevens Point. Stout defeated Stevens Point for the second time this season, 88-78, on Wednesday night at Johnson Fieldhouse. The last time Stout went 2-0 against Stevens Point was in 2001, where the won 72-61, and then 95-87.
- Stout defeated UW-River Falls, 100-83, Jan. 26.
- Stout reached the century mark for the fourth time this season as the Blue Devils defeated UW-River Falls, 100-83, to complete the regular season sweep Jan. 26 at Don Page Arena. The Blue Devils trailed only briefly in the middle of the first half a 48-39 lead into halftime. The Falcons cut Stout's lead to one point, 48-47, coming out of the locker room. But Stout went on a 16-6 run, fueled by a barrage of 3-pointers from Jon Ciriacks, Luke Geiger and two by Armani Tinsley, along with two buckets by Lovell Williams, for a 64-53 lead at 15:03. The Falcons did cut the lead to three, 67-64, at 11:38. Stout responded and the Falcons got no closer than five points the rest of the way. The Blue Devils had five players in double digits, led by Tinsley's 23 points. Geiger finished with 19, Williams 17, Ciriacks 16 and Brody Fox 14. TYreese Alexander finished with nine points. SCOUTING UW-STEVENS POINT:
- Stevens Point (3-11, 0-7 WIAC) has struggled all around placing in the bottom half of nearly all of the WIAC statistics. The Pointers went on a three-game winning streak back in November, but have since lost their last nine games. The Pointers are led by senior guard Garrett Nelson, who carries the bulk of Stevens Point's scoring with 16.1 points per game. Nelson is the only Pointers who have seen action in all 14 games. Some have seen action in 13 games, among those are Petter Timmerman, who gives the Pointers with 4.0 rebounds per game and Darrius Bolden. The Pointers have been thankful for Jake Buchanan lately, as he has scored 63 points in only five appearances.
- As a team, the Pointers record the lowest field goal percentage as well as the lowest field goal defense in the WIAC. The Pointers are scoring 62.7 per game.

THE POINTERS LAST TIME OUT:
- Following a 30-minute delay to start, the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (3-11, 0-7) treated the fans at Quandt Fieldhouse to 45 minutes of high-quality basketball in an 85-79 loss in overtime to UW-Whitewater (12-7, 5-3). Jake Buchanan posted a season-high 23 points to lead a quintet of UWSP players in double figures. Garrett Nelson added 14 with Zach Mootz (13), Brennan Timm (11) and Cliff McCray (11) also in double-digit scoring. | Game Story and Stats
WHEN STEVENS POINT AND STOUT LAST MET:
- The Blue Devil win snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Pointers going back to Jan. 9, 2013, with an 87-74 win, Jan. 19.
- Stout overcame a halftime deficit and outscored UW-Stevens Point by 15 points in the second half to take an 87-74 win on Bennett Court in Quandt Fieldhouse Jan. 19. Stout had five players in double figures, led by Brody Fox's 19 points. Jon Ciriacks and Luke Geiger each scored 15 points, Armani Tinsley added 14 and Jackson Noll finished with 11 points. Drew Scott scored nine points and pulled down a career-best nine rebounds. Ciriacks and Geiger both collected double-doubles, each pulling down 10 rebounds. Stout out-rebounded the Pointers 48-25. The Blue Devils shot a blistering 70.4 percent (19-27) in the second half, hitting 19 of 27 shots from the floor. The Blue Devils also made 10 of 11 second half free throws. Stout finished the game shooting 57.9 percent (33-57). Stout dropped in 7 of 18 3-pointers. Stout trailed by as much as 11 points midway through the first half, but fought back to actually take a 31-30 lead with about three minutes left before intermission. The Pointers built up a four point, 36-32 lead with about two minutes left, but a bucket by Geiger cut the lead to 36=34 at halftime. The teams traded leads and battled to several tied scores for the first seven minutes of the second half. Jackson Noll gave Stout a 54-52 lead on a 3-pointer at the 13:40 mark. igniting a 12-0 run for an 11-point 63-52 lead at 10:22. The Pointers tied the score at 66, going on their own run and again the teams traded small leads. The Pointers led 71-70 at 4:59 when Stout caught fire again, closing the game on a 17-3 run, spreading the scoring among five players. Fox dropped in four free throws and a basket for six points. Tinsley added four free throws, Geiger scored a bucket and a free throw and Ciriacks and TYreese Alexander each had two points, The Pointers got 22 points from Garrett Nelson. THE SERIES:
- Stevens Point has won nine of the last 10 games in the series. Stout has not won two in a row over Stevens Point since the Blue Devils took three consecutive from 2000 to 2002. Stout won in overtime, 95-89, Jan. 25, 2001, then made it two in a row, Dec. 8, 2001, with a 72-61 win. Stout stretched the streak to three games Jan. 19, 2002, with a 95-87 win to sweep the season. SCOUTING UW-OSHKOSH
- Oshkosh has four players averaging more than 10 points per game. Leading is Levi Borchert with 18.8 points per game. Borchert is also pulling down a WIAC-best 10.6 boards per game. Other scorers for the Titans include Eddie Muench (15.1), Hunter Plamann (12.6), and Quinn Steckbauer (11.7). Steckbauer has picked up his scoring in conference games, averaging 16.7 points per game against conference opponents.
- As a team, Oshkosh has proven to be steady on both ends of the court, ranking in the top three of the WIAC of nearly every category. Where they've hurt opponents the most is by taking away the three-ball, only allowing 4.7 threes per game, and sealing the boards, allowing a opponents to only grab 30.6 boards a game.

THE TITANS LAST TIME OUT:
- Eddie Muench had a game-high 19 points, Levi Borchert added his league-leading 10th double-double and the UW-Oshkosh men's basketball team completed the regular season sweep over UW-Platteville with a 65-51 victory during a battle of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals ranked among the top five in the country Wednesday (Feb. 2) in Kolf Sports Center. | Game Story and Stats
- UW-Eau Claire's Carter Hanke made a contested fadeaway jumper in the paint with three seconds remaining, UW-Oshkosh's attempt at a winning 3-pointer from just inside halfcourt caromed off the back of the rim and the Blugolds pulled out a 74-72 overtime win over the nationally ranked Titans men's basketball team Wednesday (Jan. 26) in Eau Claire. In a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game that featured 19 lead changes and 13 ties, UW-Oshkosh knotted the score at 62 on a Quinn Steckbauer 3-pointer with 55 seconds left in regulation and again at 64 following a Steckbauer layup with 28 seconds remaining during the second half before UW-Eau Claire missed a layup as time expired to send the game into overtime. | Game Story and Stats
WHEN OSHKOSH AND STOUT LAST MET:
- The Blue Devils were scheduled to host the Titans Jan. 15, but that game was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.
- The teams met in the first round of the 2021 WIAC basketball tournament. Oshkosh and UW-Stout played an up-tempo game, but the Titans came out on top, 98-89, in the opening game of the WIAC Championship, presented by Culver's, Monday in Kolf Sports Arena, to put an end to the Blue Devils' season, March 1, 2021. The 11th-ranked Titans took a 50-37 halftime lead, but Stout did manage to cut the lead to six points, 93-87, with 48 seconds left. The Titans made 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to seal the win. The Titans' Hunter Plamann led all scorers with 27 points, hitting 9 of 12 from the floor, with two 3-pointers, and made all seven free throw attempts. Levi Borchert had 21 points, Will Mahoney 17 points and Eddie Muench 15. Eric Peterson flirted with a double-double, scoring nine points and pulling down 10 rebounds.The third-seeded Blue Devils were led Armani Tinsley with 23 points. BLUE DEVIL HISTORY: UW-Stout, then Stout Institute, played what is believed to be their first game Jan. 11, 1907, hosting the University of Wisconsin at the Armory in Menomonie. The Badgers handed the Trainers a 29-19 loss.
UW-STOUT COACH JIM LAKE
- Jim Lake (29-50) is in his fourth season in 2021-22 as the head coach of the Blue Devils. Lake came to Stout after 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Ferris State. The Bulldogs won the 2017-18 NCAA Division II national title.
- Lake served at Ferris State University for a total of 10 years, the last five years beginning with the 2013-14 season as the program's top assistant men's basketball coach. Lake had served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bulldogs in two different stints over the previous decade, working as a part-time assistant coach from 2011-13 before moving up to the full-time lead position, and as a volunteer assistant coach from 2003-06.
- During five seasons as the Bulldogs' top assistant coach, Lake helped Ferris State to four consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) tournament championships and four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, culminating in a 38-1 overall record and the 2018 NCAA Division II national title with a 71-69 win over Northern State University in March.
UW-STEVENS POINT COACH BOB SEMLING
- Bob Semling enters his 17th season at UW-Stevens Point in 2021-22 and has won four national championships with the Pointers. In 16 seasons at UW-Stevens Point, Semling has led the Pointers to two NCAA Division III national championships (2010, 2015), in addition to being an assistant on the back-to-back national championship teams of 2004 and 2005. Through his 16 seasons as head coach, Semling has compiled an overall record of 318-107, which includes a 169-56 mark in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play. His .748 career winning percentage entering this season was the fifth-highest among active Division III coaches and ranks 45th all-time among all divisions for coaches with at least 10 seasons as a head coach. On January 11, 2014, Semling became the all-time winningest coach in UW-Stevens Point program history by recording his 201st career victory at UW-Superior. He won his 300th game at UWSP on Feb. 19, 2019, with an 89-61 victory over UW-Eau Claire in the first round of the 2019 WIAC Tournament. In 2015, Semling was named the National Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), D3hoops.com and Schelde Sports/DIII News. He also earned NABC and D3hoops.com Coach of the Year honors in 2010. Semling is a five-time WIAC Coach of the Year and has received the award in each of the last three seasons.
UW-OSHKOSH COACH MATT LEWIS
- Matt Lewis begins his third season as the Titans' head coach, but his first as not wearing the interim head coaching job. Lewis led UW-Oshkosh to a 29-3 record, the WIAC regular season championship, the NCAA Division III championship title and several school marks during his debut season. The Titans claimed their first outright WIAC title since 1978 before going on to win six NCAA postseason games by an average of 15.5 points en route to the national title. UW-Oshkosh averaged 93.7 points in its six Division III Championship victories and set the school's NCAA postseason scoring record with its 108-point performance against University of Northwestern (Minn.) during the second round.
CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the eight team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) along with UW-La Crosse, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Whitewater and UW-River Falls. The Blue Devils were picked to finish seventh in a preseason poll conducted by league coaches and sports information directors. UW-Platteville was projected to win the conference, with UW-Oshkosh second, UW-La Crosse third, UW-Whitewater fourth, UW-River Falls fifth, UW-Eau Claire sixth and UW-Stevens Point eighth.
DEWEY MINTZ COURT: The basketball court in Johnson Fieldhouse was named Dewey Mintz Court, Dec. 10, in honor of 27-year Blue Devil coach Dwain Mintz, who coached the Blue Devil men's basketball team from 1962-1989. Nearly 30 years after he retired, Mintz is currently fourth on the WIAC all-time men's basketball coaches wins list with a record of 385-280.Mintz coached league contenders throughout his tenure at UW-Stout from 1963-89, including conference championships in 1966, 1969 and 1975. He was the NAIA District 14 Coach of the Year in 1966 and 1973, and NAIA Area IV Coach of the Year in 1969. During his 27 years at UW-Stout, Dewey Mintz Court is the fifth floor named among member schools in the WIAC. The others include: Bo Ryan Court at UW-Platteville; Ken Anderson Court at UW-Eau Claire; Dave "Augie" Vander Meulen Court at UW-Whitewater; and Bennett Court at UW-Stevens Point, named in honor of Dick and Jack Bennett.
